Overview of Medical Schools Starting In January

International Pathway to MedicineJanuary 2022 entry

The International Pathway to Medicine (January intake) offers students the potential to move on to a degree in medicine at the University of St Andrews.

This is a programme with four semesters of study starting in January 2022 and finishing in June 2023. During the first two semesters, you will focus on studying sciences and learning to present and interact effectively in an academic environment. You will also start to reflect on how you can build knowledge about medicine. In the following semesters, you study modules focusing on the academic knowledge and skills required to study medicine.

The interactive teaching and learning experiences will help students understand what it means to study medicine and to be a doctor.

The programme has a high success rate. Over the past three years, an average of over 93% of students passed the International Pathway to Medicine programme, and an average of more than 75% of foundation students moved onto the BSc Medicine at St Andrews.

Advantages to Starting Your SGU MD Journey in January

1. YOU CAN START ON THE ROAD TO RESIDENCY SOONER

Perhaps youโ€™ve already started thinking about everything youโ€™ll want to do during medical school to prepare for residency. This isnโ€™t unusual when you consider the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) residency timeline starts during year one. You can concentrate on fostering relationships with instructors who could write future letters of recommendation, or planning summer internships to start building your resume.

Thereโ€™s some good news for those starting their residency journey at SGU. Of the eligible US 2020 graduates who applied for US residency positions, 95 percent obtained one at the time of graduation.* Altogether, SGU graduates secured 1,124 residency placements across the US and Canada in 2020.**

2. YOU CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FINANCING OPPORTUNITIES

Medical school is a substantial investment that can be made more affordable through scholarships and grants. All students can seek financial assistance in a number of ways

The Humanitarian Scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts in their communities. Students who’ve demonstrated high academic achievement may be eligible for one of two awards that are part of the Legacy of Excellence Scholarship Program. Students are identified during the admission process, so no application is necessary.

SGU attendees from the US and Canada who start in the winter also have a unique option. The Why Wait Opportunity provides a chance for students attending the Grenada campus to have their tuition and fees refunded should they later gain acceptance to and enroll in a Canadian or US allopathic or osteopathic medical school the following fall.

3. YOUโ€™LL ENJOY A FAVORABLE STUDENT-TO-FACULTY RATIO

When you read various medical school rankings, youโ€™ll notice student-to-faculty ratios are usually mentioned as critical to obtaining a quality education. Working in small groups is related and equally beneficial. Research suggests learning in small group settings supports academic achievement.

Students at St. Georgeโ€™s University can expect to enjoy a student-to-faculty ratio of 8:1 for small group sessions. They also attend sizable lectures, but those who start in January have an advantage. Because the winter class is traditionally smaller than the fall cohort, new students will benefit from smaller lectures as they begin their medical school journey.

4. YOUโ€™LL HAVE MORE TIME TO ADJUST TO THE RIGORS OF MEDICAL SCHOOL

Medical school is notoriously demandingโ€”and rightfully so. It can take some time to get used to the fast pace and amount of material covered when you first start medical school. Beginning in January is a great way to adjust because youโ€™ll get to enjoy a full summer break to absorb what you learned during the first term and recharge before returning in the fall.

5. YOU CAN DEVOTE MORE TIME TO PREPARING FOR IMPORTANT EXAMS

Most students take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 in the spring near the end of their second year. Doing well on this test is critical, because most residency directors rank it as the most important evaluation criteria when selecting candidates to interview. The USMLE Step 1 has a tendency of sneaking up on students, so starting early is probably the best studying advice.

SGU has an impressive track record for USMLE Step 1 performance, including a 94 percent pass rate for first-time test takers in 2019. While all students should be encouraged by this success, those beginning class in January benefit from having more time to prepare. You can wait all the way until the spring two years after beginning your education to take Step 1.

You’ll also have added time to study for your Step 2s, particularly for the clinical knowledge (CK) exam, which mirrors the Step 1. For January class students, because core rotations finish up in May, they have upward of two months to study for the CKs, whereas August entering students have limited study time due to a rotation schedule that finishes in the summertime.

The same applies to Canadian students who have their sights on obtaining a residency in Canada. To do so, students have to pass the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) Step 1, and a January start gives them ample time to prepare.

6. YOU CAN DEVOTE MORE TIME TO PREPARING FOR RESIDENCY

There is plenty that goes into building the foundation for the rest of your medical career. By starting in January, you have the opportunity to schedule and complete more fourth-year electives in your desired specialty, including highly competitive fields, prior to submitting a residency application. With this alone, you get increased 1:1 exposure to residency directors and influencers, who may offer their assistance with your all-important letters of recommendation or, even better, see you as the kind of doctor they want to bring in as a resident.

Top Schools to Study Medicine

Medical school is hard, but choosing the right school doesn’t have to be. If you are a top student looking for a top school, this list should give you a good idea of where to apply. Although many US medical schools do not accept international students for medicine, most of the best ones do.

Choosing the right school is almost as important as choosing the right major. Unfortunately, international students interested in studying at the best schools for medicine are at a distinct disadvantage. Many schools only accept local students, and the schools that are open to international students only accept a small percentage of those who apply. However, most of the top medical schools in the US do accept international students.

Choosing Your Focus

Before you begin narrowing down your school choices, youโ€™ll need to decide whether youโ€™re interested in research or primary care. While you can study to become a primary care doctor at pretty much any medical school, programs that emphasize primary care tend to include more patient contact, coursework in patient handling, and longer clinical rotations in general fields.

If you are more interested in a career in academic medicine or biomedical research, you should look for schools with strong research programs. Schools focused on primary care training will not offer you the same opportunities, facilities, mentors or funding.

Top US Medical Schools for Research

If youโ€™re interested in a career in medical research, the top three medical schools in the US are:

  1. Harvard is one of the top schools in the US no matter what the major is, so it should be of little surprise that Harvard Medical School comes in at number one on this list. More than being one of the best schools for medicine, Harvard accepts international students. Make sure you have the money though, as the school requires students to provide proof of their ability to pay. If you have the money and can get accepted, all that will be left is making it through the notoriously difficult, grueling workload. After that, your degree will be recognized anywhere in the world.
  2. Stanford University School of Medicine accepts between 1 to 5 non-US students a year, and this number includes Canadian citizens. Much like the previously mentioned schools, you will have to set aside money to prove you can pay for your tuition and living expenses. However, unlike the other schools, Stanford does provide loans to international students if needed. Also unique about the school is its curriculum. Students choose an area they would like to focus on and are educated in that area specifically, along with the standard core classes.
  3. One of the advantages of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, besides being one of the top schools to study medicine in the US, is that it considers all of its applicants on the same scale, regardless of whether they are international or local. In other words, rather than having a set number or percentage of international students that the school is allowed to accept, Johns Hopkins University only looks at whether or not a student is qualified and accepts or rejects the application on that basis alone. The catch is that there is no available financial assistance. Additionally, you will have to place to cover your entire tuition and living costs in an escrow before being allowed to attend. Besides studying in one of the best schools for medicine, you will also be able to gain firsthand experience in the famous Johns Hopkins Hospital, one of the best hospitals in the country.

Top US Medical Schools for Primary Care

American University of Antigua

  1. The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill is the second highest ranking primary care med school in the United States. UNC – Chapel Hill operates on the traditional four-year medical curriculum. Students at UNC have the opportunity to engage in summer electives, as well as the opportunity to study abroad. Studentsโ€™ third year clerkship must be completed in the UNC Hospitals system or an affiliated hospital. UNC – Chapel Hill also offers more than 50 student organizations and a variety of community service groups. The School of Medicine operates more than 30 specialized centers and institutes, including the Center for AIDS Research and the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies.
  2. Next on the list is the University of California – San Francisco. University of Californiaโ€”San Francisco School of Medicine students take two years of block courses before completing a year of clerkships and a year of clinicals. UCSF MD students have the option to add on a second degree through dual and joint programs. For example, in the M.D./M.S. program, students combine their medical studies with a focus on research in the sciences or humanities with a master’s degree in health and medical sciences from the University of Californiaโ€”Berkeley. Then, they move to UCSF to complete their M.D. UCSF also offers the Program in Medical Education for the Urban Underserved, a five-year program that prepares students who want to work in impoverished communities across the country.
  3. The University of California – Los Angeles is ranked 6th in the US for primary care programs. The curriculum at UCLA is divided into three phases: Human Biology and Disease, Core Clinical Clerkship, and 4th Year Colleges. Students at UCLA can also earn a combined degree, such as a M.D./Ph.D. through the Medical Scientist Training Program, an M.D./M.B.A. with the UCLA Anderson School of Management, or an M.D.-Oral Surgery Residency. UCLA also offers a few joint degree programs, offered in conjunction with other institutions, including the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science/UCLA Medical Education Program, designed for students who want to work in disadvantaged rural and urban communities.

Remember that as an international student, you are not limited to just these schools. You will just have to do a little more research to determine which medical schools accept international students. The school of medicine at the University of Kansas, for example, only requires that applicants hold a bachelorโ€™s degree from a four-year college or university accredited by a CHEA-approved accreditation body. If you would like to pursue a more specialized route like nutrition sciences or chiropractic, there are a variety of institutions like Logan University that allow you to specialize in the program of your interest.

If you are an international student interested in studying medicine in the US, donโ€™t give up hope! There are plenty of options available to you.
