The university was founded in 1950 by integrating the former Warsaw Medical Academy along with other institutions. The medical school of the University of Warsaw has a long history, dating to 1568 when King Sigismund II Augustus founded a department for medicine within Collegium Maius (Polish: Wydziaล Nauk Medycznych Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego).

Academic Structure
The university offers several study programmes at the undergraduate level, including a 3-year M.D.-PhD course, a 5-year M.D., and 6-year integrated M.D.-PhD course. The latter two are equivalent to the MBBS degree in India, while the former is considered equivalent to other countries’ MD degree.
The university also offers graduate studies for students who have completed their undergraduate studies or have research experience in the field of medicine or other sciences such as biology and chemistry. Graduate students can choose from 4 different areas: medical sciences (including anatomy & physiology), clinical medicine (including internal medicine), dental science and veterinary science.
