About Michigan Tech Scholarship Chart

Free, Online Application
Applying to Michigan Technological University is free, easy, and online—there is no deadline to apply. Just submit your application for admission, official high school and/or college transcripts. For fall 2022 applicants, official SAT or ACT scores are not required, but are recommended, for merit based scholarship consideration. Plus, there’s no need for letters of recommendation or essays (for most majors).

Admission requirements vary by major. The admissions committee will review your transcript to see the courses you took and grades you received. If you’d like to talk about your specific academic credentials related to admission, contact the admissions staff.

Additional Application Materials
Additional application materials may be required if you are applying for admission into the following degree programs:

audio production and technology
sound design
theatre and electronic media performance
theatre and entertainment technology
GPA
We’ll review your high school transcript and evaluate the courses you took and the grades you received. The cumulative GPA provided by your high school is used in the admissions process. If you have a weighted and unweighted GPA, we will use whichever is best for you in terms of admission and merit-based scholarships. We do not recalculate your GPA; however, we will convert your GPA to a 4.0 scale if your school uses a different grading scale.

Test Scores
First-year applicants applying for admission during 2022 semesters are not required to submit test scores. Homeschool students and students with a GPA below a 3.0 may be required to submit official test scores or other documentation. If you’ve taken both exams, or taken an exam more than once, we use whichever scores from a single test benefit you most for admission and merit-based scholarships. Michigan Tech does not superscore.

Official SAT or ACT scores are not required, but are recommended, for merit based scholarship consideration. If you have taken, or have the opportunity to take the SAT or ACT, we strongly encourage you to provide official scores as they can be used for merit scholarship consideration, as well as future course placement.

Michigan Tech accepts either the SAT or ACT and has no preference to which scores students submit—students receive equal consideration for admission and merit-based scholarships with either set of scores.

If you’re preparing for the SAT, just 15 minutes a day using free online tools through Khan Academy can significantly increase your total score. This means better chances for admission and scholarships (at all schools—not just Michigan Tech).

Recommended High School Courses
We recommend the following college-prep curriculum. Keep in mind these are recommendations, not requirements for admission.

Collapse All
Mathematics
Three years recommended; Four years strongly recommended.

It is strongly recommended students have a fourth year of college-prep mathematics, the core of which should be college algebra and analytic geometry, the elementary functions, limits, and similar precalculus topics; other topics might include probability, statistics, permutations and combinations, mathematics induction, an introduction to the use of sets, and introduction to computers and computing, or an introduction to matrices and determinants. The emphasis should be placed on basic concepts and the principles of deductive reasoning, regardless of the choice of topic.

Calculus, where offered in secondary schools, should be at least a full-year course and be taken by students who are strongly prepared in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and coordinate geometry. Students who complete a full-year calculus course should also inquire about advanced placement.

Natural Science
Three years strongly recommended—including one year of biological sciences and one year of chemistry or physics.

English
Three years recommended; Four years strongly recommended.

Classes should cover literature, composition, standard language usage, essay/theme writing, writing a research paper, and a half year of speech.

Social Studies

Homeschoolers
Homeschool students are encouraged to apply for admission to Michigan Tech. You’ll need to submit an application for admission and an official transcript showing courses taken and grades received. Homeschool students may be required to submit SAT or ACT scores or other documentation; scores must be sent directly to Michigan Tech—our SAT code is 1464; our ACT code is 2030.

High School Graduation
To enroll at Michigan Tech, you must be awarded a high school diploma or have earned your GED (or other high school equivalency exam). An official final transcript, showing your final grades and graduation date, is required within 30 days of your high school graduation. Upon completion of your senior year, request to have an official final transcript sent directly to Michigan Tech from your high school. To be considered official, a transcript must be sent directly to Michigan Tech by the institution issuing the transcript, or from a transcript service such as Parchment. Transcripts stamped “issued to student” or those hand delivered, even if in a sealed envelope, are not acceptable.

Your final transcript will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee to verify continued academic success during the period after that covered by the transcript used at the time of your acceptance to Michigan Tech. If you experienced a departure from your previous academic performance, you will be contacted and asked to provide a detailed explanation. A significant decline in academic performance during your senior year may affect your enrollment status and, at the University’s discretion, result in a revocation of your admission and any financial assistance awarded.

Students who earn a certificate of attendance, even if admitted to Michigan Tech prior to receipt of the final transcript, will not be allowed to enroll at Michigan Tech as a degree-seeking student.

High School Equivalency Exam Holders
Students who have earned high school equivalency through the GED, HiSET, or TASC may submit test results in lieu of a high school transcript. Request your transcript through the appropriate testing agency: GED, HiSET, or TASC.
