Every year, many engineering students and graduates from India apply for MS programs in the US. When it comes to academic profiles, we always recommend having a CGPA of 7.5 โ€“ 8.0 and a GRE score of 315 โ€“ 320 in order to get accepted at the top universities for MS programs in science and technology.

If you are planning to apply for colleges and universities in the U.S., there are few things you have to understand:

  • The US education system is different than the system followed in India
  • There are so many universities and colleges and every school is unique
  • The application process at U.S. universities is not the same as the college admission process in India or in other countries.

The following comment very well suggests that this person is just starting to look into the US University admission process.

Minimum Requirements

Every school has its own set of requirements. There are U.S. universities that accept students with very low or no GRE scores, while others require scores above 1,400.

So stop looking for the general GRE cutoff score requirements and start learning how universities accept international students.

If you believe that all U.S. colleges and universities have an average GRE cutoff score, well you are very wrong.

Each school may or may not disclose their minimum GRE score required for admission. The same condition applies to academic percentage, GMAT score, etc.

Some universities have minimum TOEFL scores required for admission. If you donโ€™t have the minimum TOEFL Score, you may still get conditional admission.

If oneโ€™s academic percentage is less that 60%, almost everyone believe that they cannot get into a good school. But whatโ€™s actually correct is that you only have to compare yourself with top ranked students in your batch.

For instance, if the top ranked student in your class has 65%, then your 60% is not a low academic percentage. The above pattern applies to all the departments, programs and majors, not just for pharmacology.

Prospective graduate students should first contact the graduate program to which they wish to apply. They will be admitted to study only in programs that are authorized by Senate to offer master’s and/or doctoral degrees. All applications must be accompanied by an application fee at the time of submission. The number of students that can be accommodated is limited, and graduate programs with limited facilities may accept the best-qualified students as vacancies occur.

Most students begin their program of study in September, but students may also be admitted to start their programs in May or in January. Limitations on the number of students that can be accommodated often results in students being selected well before these dates. Students are encouraged to submit applications for admission as early as possible.

Master’s Programs

Normally, applicants for a master’s degree program must hold the academic equivalent of a four-year bachelor’s degree from UBC including one of the following:

  • A minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC) in third- and fourth-year courses.
  • Academic standing with at least 12 credits of third- or fourth-year courses in the A grade range (80% or higher at UBC) in the field of study.

Alternatively, applicants who do not meet the requirements stated above, but who have had other significant formal training, relevant professional experience, and/or otherwise possess demonstrable knowledge or expertise that would prepare them adequately for successful study in a specific graduate program, may be granted admission on the recommendation of the appropriate graduate program and approval of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Individuals of Aboriginal ancestry are particularly encouraged to apply. Please read the additional information for Aboriginal applicants to graduate programs.

Note: Additional coursework outside the bachelor’s degree to improve a low GPA or to meet the 12 credit requirement, for example as unclassified student at UBC, can be taken into consideration based on a rationale from a specific program, but does not guarantee eligibility for admission.
