The Higher Education Amendments of 1965 require schools to construct budgets for students that reflect costs the student can expect to incur during his/her enrollment. The Amendments mandate that these budgets reflect the costs for the student only and do not permit inclusion of expenses incurred by other family members.
A note to students with dependents: “Dependent Care”, such as day care expenses for children, or costs for elderly or disabled dependent care so that you might attend school are not included in the Standard Cost of attendance. This can be included on a case by case basis. If you experience a unique situation or extenuating circumstance please contact the Financial Aid office.
Estimated costs for attending the USF Morsani College of Medicine are the sum of the tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, commuting expenses and an allowance for personal expenses. Cost of Attendance only covers the months that a student is enrolled in classes. Enrollment can vary between 8 to 12 months. The aid received may need to be budgeted to last for a longer period until the next year of enrollment begins. These budgets are established to allow sufficient funds to provide for a moderate standard of living in the Tampa Bay area.

Tuition and Fees
Tuition for Florida State medical schools is a flat yearly rate, regardless of the actual hours a student is enrolled. Tuition and Fees are estimated in the Cost of Attendance charts using the prior aid year’s tuition and fees. The dates of attendance may change and the cost may vary slightly for the 18-19 aid year. For more information about tuition, fees, and payments, please visit the Registrar’s Tuition Information Page.
A word about tuition late fee waivers: The USF Health Office of Financial Aid will approve a waiver of the Late Payment Fee if a student is unable to make payment on time due to circumstances determined by the University to be exceptional and beyond the control of the student. Late fee waivers will not be approved if the disbursement delay is due to late submission of financial aid requirements by the student.
Additional Expenses
Room and Board
The costs included in this category of the budget are estimates of expenses that the average student may incur during each year of enrollment in the Morsani College of Medicine. While actual expenses will vary among students, the estimated total cost of living will allow for a low to moderate standard of living. The calculation for room expenses is one-half the average rental rate of a two-bedroom apartment in the area. Single students are expected to share living facilities to help reduce expenses. An allowance is made for the following items:
- half the rent for a two bedroom apartment
- utilities
- furniture rental
- phone
- miscellaneous (renters insurance, garbage pickup, etc.)
- food
There is also a budget for students who live at home with their parents. The allowances for room and board are of course lower in the “Living with Parents” budget than the “Living Away” budget.
Books and Supplies
Actual prices of required texts for each class are obtained from the Morsani College of Medicine. In addition, the cost of attendance includes an allowance for medical instruments and miscellaneous supplies. The cost for an approved computer is not included in the standard cost of attendance but can be included only one time on a case by case basis.
Personal Expenses
- laundry, cleaning, supplies
- entertainment
- clothing, haircuts
- health insurance
- dental checkup
- graduation costs (cap & gown, announcements)
- U.S. Medical Licensing Examinations (Step I, II and Step II CS)
Commuting Expenses
Travel costs are included in the student budgets. Where the amount is greater than other years’ budget, travel costs to area hospitals is included. The cost of parking downtown is also included in this category.
