Accelerated BSN Program

Do you have a baccalaureate degree in another field, but are considering a career in nursing? Mount Saint Mary’s University recommends our Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program.

With both summer and fall program starts, the ABSN program is the perfect transition to a career in nursing. The degree program is limited to 40 students each term.

The ABSN program is structured in a demanding and accelerated format. ABSN students are required to attend planned lecture and clinical learning experiences up to 40 hours each week, including weekends. Given these demands, applicants admitted to the program should not plan to work during the 12-months of the program

Minimum requirements for consideration are as follows:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Completion of all prerequisite requirements with a grade of C or better

Once you’ve completed your prerequisites (or are nearly complete), we invite you to submit your ABSN degree program application. Here are some key dates to remember:

  • For the summer term, application opens July 1. Your required documents must arrive at the Admission Office or be postmarked by November 1. The start date for the summer term is mid-May.
  • For the fall term, application opens December 1. Your documents must arrive or be postmarked by March 1. The start date for the fall term is end of August.

As with all Mount nursing programs, our Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nurses and accredited by the Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education.

RN to BSN Program

Direct-to-Nursing Option-

If you have passed the NCLEX-RN exam for Registered Nurse, then the Direct-to-Nursing Option is for you. To qualify, you must have a valid and unencumbered, current Registered Nurse license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing to practice in the state of California.

You’ll immediately begin in the nursing portion of the program. Depending on the number of General Education requirements you have pending, you also be able to take General Education courses through MSMU’s Weekend College.

Pre-Nursing Option-

Have you not yet passed the NCLEX-RN exam for Registered Nurse? If so, then the Pre-Nursing Option is just for you.

To qualify, you will need to complete the General Education Requirements listed in the “Curriculum – General Requirements” section. You’ll take these before moving into the BSN portion of the program.

Pre-Nursing candidates for the RN to BSN Completion are limited to one semester. During this time, Pre-Nursing candidates must pass the NCLEX-RN and may take some General Education requirements prior to entering the RN to BSN Completion Program.

Pre-Nursing admits: Students may be admitted without an R.N. license, but must have passed the NCLEX-RN within the first semester in order to progress in the program. Students will not be permitted to take nursing courses until they have an active R.N. license. Students with a GPA less than a 2.8 may, if possible, take General Education courses for one semester to increase their GPA.

Although there have been tough and stressful times, the staff, professors, and other students have been super supportive. I say take advantage of all the resources offered here whether it is financially or academically. At this school you meet people who are passionate about whatever field they are studying in, and you can tell they really want to be here. You are able to get close to professors and get the help you need because they are available more since class sizes are small. It’s also very easy to find jobs on campus that are either non-work study or work study.

ReportStart Your Review of Mount Saint Mary’s University – CaliforniaRate It!Rating 4 out of 5 Mount Saint Mary’s University is an amazing place to receive your education, but you MUST take full advantage of ALL the services it provides to students. It is a small school with 20-30 students per class (usually less for more specific classes). These class sizes make it possible for you to be acquainted with your professors. Students may be hard to get along with in certain groups, but once you find your niche, you’re A-Okay! IT is EXTREMELY expensive, so please find ANY free money you can. You WILL pay for everything not included in your academic package (meal plans – even with housing, parking [you’ll save $50 with the semester package], books [some business classes REQUIRE online supplementals costing about $100], etc). With all the money you are spending, there are free services (peer-tutoring for specific subjects, professional tutoring, resume help, career development planning, psychological services, borrowed calculators, etc).

ReportRating 5 out of 5 Due to COVID-19, this is my second semester taking full-time online course at MSMU. MSMU has programs in place to help all students achieve their goals, even after setbacks, failure, or personal crisis. It is a beautiful, safe environment and a place to explore new ideas while achieving professional goals. All professors provide various communication tools, course are organized, resources and materials are provided in a straight-forward method.
