The Department of Music provides many opportunities for creative performance activities, both for music majors and for students with careers in other disciplines who also wish to pursue personal development in the performing arts.

Undergraduate degree programs in Music provide students with a broad foundation in music theory and history that is grounded in perspectives of culture, place and era. Competence in artistic performance is strongly valued and is contextualized to the area of emphasis that each student pursues.
Undergraduate degree programs also emphasize preparation for successful graduate study for students who wish to pursue higher education beyond the baccalaureate degree.
There are two types of undergraduate degree programs offered at Cal State LA. The Bachelor of Arts degree program and the Bachelor of Music degree program.

The Bachelor of Arts degree serves the needs of students whose primary interests are music theory, history and literature, or those who wish to pursue a liberal arts education with an emphasis in music. The degree also allows students to pursue individual interests in music to prepare them for careers in music or music-related careers.

The Bachelor of Music degree is a rigorous curriculum for students who wish to prepare for a specific professional career in music or for those who wish to reach a professional caliber of music attainment within the Bachelor of Music degree program. Students may pursue specialized study in vocal, instrumental, or keyboard performance; composition; jazz studies; commercial music; and music education (credential preparation).

Students who wish to enroll as an undergraduate music major are required to perform an audition before a faculty panel upon entrance. Students may audition in voice, piano or on another instrument that is taught in the Department of Music.
Bachelor of Arts degree students are expected to demonstrate evidence of previous music study sufficient for success in a university music program. Candidates for the Bachelor of Music degree must demonstrate significant technical and artistic accomplishment in at least one area of vocal or instrumental performance before being admitted to this professional degree program. Candidates for the Bachelor of Music major may apply either before or after enrolling in the Department of Music at California State University, Los Angeles.

To complete a degree in music, students are required to develop their performance ability and to appear in at least one student solo or ensemble recital or concert each year. All music majors must demonstrate progress in the study of their major performing medium (instrument or voice) before a faculty jury at the end of each semester in which they are enrolled in applied lessons. Individual instrumental and vocal applied music lessons are only available to music majors who have passed the performance audition.
Undergraduate and graduate music majors and minors are required to participate in a major performance ensemble, and complete it with a “C” or better for each semester of residence as follows:

Students who declare a wind or percussion instrument as the principal performance area must register for band, students who declare an orchestral string instrument as the principal performance area must register for string ensemble, and studentswho declare voice as the principal performance area must register for choir.  BA, MA, and other students without a declared principal performance area must participate in one of major performance ensembles listed above, commensurate with skilllevel of the student, assigned by the ensemble director, and in consultation with area coordinators.

Students accepted into the BM- or MM-Commercial Music will register for Commercial Music Ensemble as their major performance ensemble.

Students accepted into the BM-Jazz Studies will register for Jazz Ensemble as their major performance ensemble.

Students accepted into the MM-Afro-Latin program will register for Afro-Latin Ensemble as their major performance ensemble.

A student whose principal performance area is Keyboard or Classical guitar must participate in a major performance ensemble for four semesters before substituting the appropriate Chamber Music or Guitar Ensemble in place of a major performance ensemble.  Transfer students in these areas must have two semesters of Major Performance Ensemble in residence at CSULA before substitution with Chamber Music or Guitar Ensemble in place of Major Performance Ensemble is permitted, if otherprerequisites are met (i.e., four semesters continuous enrollment).

A student who has completed state-funded lessons, who is not taking lessons at all, or who is taking fewer than six units of music must still be in an appropriate major performance ensemble (with the exception of MM and MA students who havecompleted all coursework).

Music minors who have completed their music coursework have met the performance ensemble requirement

The Music Department Student Guidebook contains other policies and regulations, including a concert attendance policy, which pertains to all music majors and minors. It is each student’s responsibility to obtain a copy of the handbook and to become familiar with its contents. Failure to comply with policies and regulations outlined in the handbook may affect continued enrollment in the program and/or eligibility for graduation.

Students who demonstrate competence in performance and theory above the minimum requirement may earn advanced standing. Lower division students may register for and earn credit in upper division performance courses. Students who enter Cal State LA as freshmen will be required to complete four (4) semesters of MUS 1000 Concert/recital Attendance (0). Transfer students will be required to complete four (4) semesters of MUS 1000 or the equivalent from their community college.

How to Choose the Right Audio Engineering School
Choosing a career in audio engineering is a big decision that, more than anything, needs to be made based on what is right for you. The decision goes beyond choosing a schoolโ€”you should also consider the demand for audio engineering jobs and the process involved in becoming an audio engineer. Weโ€™ve answered these questions for you to help you weigh out your options.

JUMP TO SECTION:
Is there a high demand for audio engineers?

How do I become an audio engineer?

How long is audio engineering school?

Why should I go to audio engineering school?

What are the best audio engineering schools in 2022?

Is There a High Demand for Audio Engineers?
Despite the Covid 19 pandemic hampering live events, many audio engineers are talking at length about how the pandemic has created the busiest year of work for them yet!

Michael Elliott from the Dark Horse Institute writes:

โ€œWith no shows on the books, artists have had an entire year to create. With many artists writing and producing more songs than ever, audio engineers have been busier than ever. Many of my peers who are audio engineers around the Nashville area have had one of their busiest years since theyโ€™ve entered the business.โ€

Haley Zaremba, writer for Majoring in Music, writes:

โ€œCovid has not changed the art of audio production. Instead, it has accelerated a process that has already been in place for years. In this sense, COVID-19 is not necessarily a tragic disruption of the audio school curriculum, but rather an essential and overdue opportunity to reshape the way we teach and learn audio production for a modern world that requires flexibility over all else.โ€

Beyond the conversations buzzing on the ground floor, the American Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a 21% projected increase between 2020 and 2030 in the production industries including audio engineering, broadcast, and video production.

These first hand reports contain a collective sigh of relief for existing audio engineers, and the BLS data acts as a beacon of hope for future audio enthusiasts looking to pursue a career in this industry. It means that, yes, these jobs are in high demand.

How Do I Become an Audio Engineer?
Above all else, experience means the most. Becoming an audio engineer, then, means gaining experience with as many components of the production process as you can.

To help yourself understand how best to become an audio engineer, spend some time reviewing as many job postings as possible to get a feel for what proficiencies are expected of audio engineers.

We reviewed over 100 job postings and learned there is something unique about career paths in audio engineering. Employers from the USA and Canada tend to be very descriptive about the programs and skills they wish to find in their audio engineering employees. But when it comes to education, many job postings speak very broadly about it, especially at the entry to mid-seniority level. The majority state that โ€œequivalent experienceโ€ will satisfy the job requirements without any formal or specific post secondary education.

Of course, there are more advanced positions that do require traditional education credentials. Those job listings often ask for โ€˜formal education in sound or related fields,โ€™ allowing for ample wiggle room to make any traditional education in audio engineering applicable to these job opportunities. Good news, yes?

One thing many positions have in common is the need for other certifications with or without a traditional post secondary education. These certificates can include:

PSAV technician certificates (very commonly requested, and employers often provide grace periods to complete trainings after employment has started)
โ€˜Working at heightsโ€™ certifications (related to live event audio set-ups, but we still saw this request and requests for scissor lift certifications as well)
Valid Driverโ€™s licences
Why Go to Audio Engineering School?
While you can get in the door with the right mix of experience and knowledge of programs without any post secondary education, itโ€™s difficult to find that knowledge outside of that education.

At the heart of what these certificate, diploma, and degree programs offer you is a chance to gain that experience and build portfolios along with connections for a successful future upon graduation.

How Long is Audio Engineering School?
As youโ€™ll see below, each program has its own duration. Of course, the longer programs are likely to result in degree-level credentials. As we mentioned above, very often, the credential itself isnโ€™t what matters, itโ€™s the experience you get with the technology, equipment, and people that will make you a stellar candidate for audio engineering positions after graduation.

Notice that tuition ranges drastically from one program to another. While weโ€™ve stressed the reality that any credential will be more than enough to get you into the jobs you want, the programs below truly provide a learning experience and environment that will become an invaluable asset for your future career growth. Get your notepad readyโ€ฆ

What Are The Best Audio Engineering Schools for 2022?
