Formerly known as the Nelson Technical School, the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology was established in the year 1904. Initially, it offered education in courses like plumbing, commerce, craft, secretarial, cookery, and engineering. In the year 1930, this institute merged with the Nelson College, providing several new vocational and part-time courses to the students. In the year 1971, Nelson Polytechnic became an independent technical institute.
NMIT is a government-funded institution and is authorized by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. Presently, it offers courses in several disciplines, including arts, engineering, business, Computing & information technology, social sciences, writing, and tourism.
This institute has two campuses, situated in Blenheim and Nelson, New Zealand. The Nelson Campus, located in the center of Nelson city, is nearby many shopping centers and entertainment spots. It provides many amenities to the students, including a sports court, parking facilities, accommodations, learning centers, and childcare facilities. Furthermore, this campus is open to the public and caters to them with facilities such as the Beauty Zone and the Rata Room. The Marlborough Campus is home to programs like viticulture, wine-making, and aviation. Additionally, students can avail of facilities such as cafes, a world-class wine research center, and a library. In the year 2006, the institute leased its Richmond Campus to Skills Update Training Institute.
In the academic year of 2018, the total student enrolment of this institute was 7,218. In this figure, the number of international students was 1,357. In the same year, the percentage of female students measured to be 53.30%, and the male student percentage measured 46.70%. In 2018, the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology had 136 academic staff and 154 administrative/business support staff. This institute offers two scholarships to international students, namely the NZ$3000 Bachelor’s Degree Scholarship and English Language Pathway Scholarships.
The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology has produced many notable alumni working in various industries. Some of the prominent names include Francesco Pessione (Director of an accountancy firm) and Gilbert Robertson (Head of Nelson-based business advisory firm). Recently, the graduates of this institute were honored 25 years of the NMIT degree. This institution takes pride in celebrating the success of its alumni.
