There are over 13,500 undergraduate students enrolled in Northeastern University. Most live on campus among a dozen residence halls. The University sponsors over 200 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. Northeastern University is a private, 4-year institution located in Boston, MA. Founded in 1898 as the Evening Institute for Younger Men; the name was changed to Northeastern College in 1916 and became Northeastern University in 1921. Women were first admitted after WWII. Situated in the Fenway/Kenmore, Back Bay neighborhoods of metropolitan Boston, the 70 acre campus features a surprising amount of open space and trees for its urban location. The campus features buildings of varied style, including modern and contemporary architecture. The University also has satellite locations in Charlotte, NC, Seattle, WA and Silicon Valley, CA for graduate degree programs. Nursing students have several paths to earn a BSN. Available programs include a BSN, accelerated BSN, and RN to BSN program. The university also offers MSN, RN to MSN, accelerated MSN, and several DNP and PhD programs, which all have current accreditation by the CCNE. The traditional BSN program is intensive and typically takes five years to complete. The accelerated BSN program is for students that already possess a baccalaureate degree in a field other than nursing, and takes about 16 months to complete. Both the traditional and accelerated BSN programs include clinical placements at Boston-area hospitals and prepare students to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam.

Northeastern Nursing Program Admission

In order to qualify for admission to the upper-division major in nursing, the student must:

  1. Be graduated from a state-approved associate degree or diploma nursing program.  
  2. Official transcripts from each school attended and have an overall GPA of 2.0 with no grade below a “C” in nursing support (upper and lower-division) and lower-division nursing courses.
  3. Be currently licensed as an R.N. (Graduate nurses may be admitted on the condition that they must achieve R.N. status by the end of their first semester). 
  4. Documentation of immunizations including MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, TB, TDaP, and Influenza.
  5. Documentation of current signed American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR card or eCard.
  6. Documentation of current professional liability insurance policy face sheet reflecting minimum coverage of $1,000,000/incident and $3,000,000 aggregate; the nursing program must be listed as a certificate holder. 
  7. Complete a national background check and drug test.

Diploma graduates and those from non-HLC accredited nursing programs must successfully complete nursing proficiency tests. Credit for lower-division nursing content will be awarded to those who successfully complete the tests and the first semester of the nursing program.
