what do dental students do in the summer

Incoming first-year dental students may conduct a 10-week research project, under faculty direction, the summer before their first year of dental school. This programs allows students to foster relationships with faculty and become familiar with the college before starting dental school.

Education & Training

The NYU College of Dentistry is the third oldest and the largest dental school in the United States, educating nearly 10 percent of our nation’s dentists. The College has nearly 1,900 students in its various pre- and postdoctoral programs from all over the United States and 40 foreign countries. NYU College of Dentistry has one of the strongest, largest and most rapidly growing research programs in the country. At the heart of the College’s research program is a commitment to collaboration. An important part of our research strategy is translational research. We firmly believe that in today’s world, groups of researchers must work together synergistically in order to move fundamental basic science research into practice. Whether a prospective dental student or just beginning to consider a dental career, this week-long, commuter program for undergraduate college students will introduce you to the field of dental medicine. You will gain hands-on experience in the type of preclinical coursework encountered in dental school, attend lectures, and learn about the dental school admissions process. The program will include:

Lectures from renowned Penn Dental Medicine faculty.
Hands-on classes in state-of-the-art simulation and advanced simulation labs that mimic a dental care environment and give you the experience of what it is like to drill a tooth or place a restoration. Participants will also complete restorative dentistry procedures in the simulation labs.
Informational session with members of the Admissions Office.
Question-and-answer lunch with current students, who will field questions ranging from “how to prepare to apply to dental school”, “what schools did you apply to”, to “what it is like to attend dental school.”

Summer dental programs for international students

Our unique, full-time clinical programs provide clinical experiences and didactic knowledge in various dental specialties, specifically designed for internationally-trained dentists. These non-credit, non-degree programs attract international dental professionals who plan to practice outside of the United States. Completion of any of these programs does not qualify participants for licensure in the US.

The programs offer a curriculum of didactic components and clinical experiences in the following disciplines: Comprehensive Dentistry, Esthetic Dentistry, Implant Dentistry,and Oral Surgery.

These courses are divided into 90-day programs, which can span one, two, or three years in length and include elective research experiences and presentation opportunities at professional society meetings. In addition, certain programs offer the opportunity for students to participate in NYU Dentistry’s Global Outreach Program.

SUMMER PRACTICUM PROGRAM FOR INTERNATIONAL DENTAL STUDENTS

The Summer Practicum for International Dental Students at NYU College of Dentistry is an annual two week program designed for international dental students from universities outside the US who are interested in gaining a US dental education experience with exposure to New York City culture.

Dental research for high school students

The School of Dental Medicine is a nationally recognized center for dental research. Students who take advantage of research opportunities become far more knowledgeable of their profession regardless of whether or not they choose a career in dental research.

Participation in research:

Encourages critical review and analysis of scientific design — skills crucial to the development of clinical competence in diagnosing and treating patients
Provides insight into additional career alternatives; some participants have chosen to pursue careers in academic dentistry following their research
Allows students to interact and work with faculty under more informal circumstances; many students work with a single faculty member on research in a specific area that extends over three or four years
May lead to publication of research in scientific literature, as well as travel for presentation of data at national and international meetings

Steps for Participation

Identify and contact mentor (be persisitent)

Write a research proposal with that individual

– Attain IACUC or IRB approval if needed

Submit proposal for reveiew (success greater than 90%)

Spend 5/6 weeks* doing summer research

– wet lab or clinical data analyses

– attend weekly research seminar (every Tuesday)

– present work at biomedical research retreat (end of summer)
