Oxfordโ€™s six-year traditional Medicine course consists of practicals, lectures and tutorials and provides students with the understanding needed to enter clinical Medicine. Oxford retains a three-year preclinical stage in which students gain a comprehensive understanding of medical science and work towards a Medical Sciences BA.

This stage is split into two; the first lasts for five terms and provides the qualifications needed to access clinical years further on. In the second stage, students will gain an understanding of scientific methods and learn to develop critical skills that encourage a deeper study of five advanced options. Students must undertake a research project that works with one of the various research labs in Oxford or beyond.

This is followed by a three-year clinical stage, where students prepare for Foundation training. This opens up opportunities for research and presentation opportunities as well as the development of knowledge in particular specialist areas.

More than 23,000 people applied for undergraduate study in 2019 and over 30,000 people applied for graduate study. Oxford has around 3,300 undergraduate places and about 5,500 graduate places each year.

Oxford University is pleased to publish its third Annual Admissions Statistical Report. This gives information on the students who have applied to our undergraduate courses, received offers and been admitted, over the last five years. The statistics are broken down by domicile, nation and region of the UK, disadvantage, school type, gender, ethnicity and disability, and they are presented at University level and by course and college.

The data reveals steady progress towards our journey of diversifying our student body, as well as evidence that this work is far from over. Some groups remain under-represented in our community. We are committed to building a more inclusive Oxford and being representative of wider society.

Last year we took significant strides towards this goal, when we announced two new initiatives, which overtime will see our intake of British undergraduates from low-income backgrounds increase to 25% by 2023. The first cohort of students admitted via our Opportunity Oxford bridging programme will begin this September, and we will begin the roll-out of Foundation Oxford next year.
