The University of Oxford Acceptance Rate in 2022

Also note:

  • A Level Further Mathematics is very strongly encouraged. If unavailable or youโ€™ve recognised its desirability too late, weโ€™d advise you to do as much additional pure maths and mechanics as possible, eg by studying advanced material or Further Mathematics AS Level.
  • All Colleges, except Trinity, welcome applications from students taking A Level Mathematics and a suitable vocational qualification, eg a BTEC Higher National Diploma in an engineering discipline. Applicants are expected to achieve the highest possible grades in A Level Mathematics and the vocational qualification. Those taking the Single Award Applied A Level in Engineering or the Principal Learning components of the Advanced Diploma in Engineering must also be taking A Levels in Mathematics and Physics.
  • T-Levels are not considered appropriate preparation for the Cambridge Engineering degree and are therefore not accepted for entry. Applicants with a mix of qualifications should contact a College admissions office for advice.
  • All Colleges welcome applications from students wishing to defer entry in order to pursue an Engineering related gap year. Some Colleges are particularly keen to support such applicants, please see the Department website for details.

* IB applicants are expected to take IB Higher Level ‘Analysis and Approaches’ for any course where Mathematics is a requirement. If this option is not available at your school, please contact the College that you wish to apply to directly for further advice and guidance.

Admission assessment

For 2022 entry, all applicants for Engineering (including applicants to mature Colleges) are required to take a pre-interview written assessment on 3 November 2021, at an authorised centre local to them (for a lot of applicants, this will be their school/college).

Assessment format

  • Section 1: Mathematics and Physics multiple-choice questions. (60 minutes, no calculator)
  • Section 2: Advanced Physics multiple-choice questions. (60 minutes, no calculator)

In addition to the pre-interview assessment, applicants to the following Colleges are required to take a College-set written assessment at interview (see individual College websites for details): King’sPeterhouseRobinsonTrinity.

Please note that your performance in the pre-interview assessment will not be considered in isolation, but will be taken into account alongside the other elements of your application.

Specimen papers

A specimen paper has been produced to allow you to sample the written assessment format and practice under timed conditions. It is not expected that you will answer every question correctly; the written assessment is designed to be challenging. Even some strong candidates may not complete the paper in the time allowed; it is designed to distinguish across our field of high-calibre applicants.

Experience with similar assessments and from trials indicates that, on average, typical applicants to the most highly selective undergraduate courses (who are by definition academically very able) will gain approximately half of the available marks. The best applicants will score more highly, but only relatively few are expected to gain more than 80 per centย of the available marks.

oxford engineering acceptance rate โ€“ CollegeLearners.com

Written assessments help admissions tutors to assess whether candidates have the skills, aptitudes and any required subject knowledge and understanding required to study the relevant course at Cambridge. They are only one of the elements used in the admissions process. Others include a candidateโ€™s academic record and forecast grades in school-leaving examinations; UCAS application form; examples of recent written work submitted to the College to which they are applying; and performance at interview, if invited to attend.

When using the specimen and past papers below, please note that the following changes to the Engineering admissions assessment were introduced in 2019:

oxford university engineering fees

The tuition fee for Home fee status students starting their first undergraduate degree in 2021 will be ยฃ9,250 for the year. The government regulated tuition fee for 2022-23 hasn’t been set. It may be different from the tuition fee for 2021 and details will be published here as soon as they are available.

You should check this website for the most up-to-date information on tuition fees before applying and prior to accepting an offer from the University should your application be successful.

The University is committed to providing a world class education and access to the very best teachers, resources and support. Therefore, we invest significantly more than the government regulated tuition fee on each student every year to ensure you get the most from your Cambridge education.

Tuition fees for students living in the Crown Dependencies (Islands)

From October 2021, new and continuing students from the Islands (Channel Islands and Isle of Man) who come to England solely for the purposes of higher education study will be eligible for Home fee status, on the basis of three years’ residency in the UK or Islands.

Tuition fees support for Home students

Currently, Home fee status students can take out a government loan for their tuition fees. At the moment, payment of thisย loan can be deferred until you’ve left university and are earning a minimum salary, at which point the loan is repaid in instalments. Please see the information onย government financial supportย and contact the appropriate student finance award agency for details about tuition fee support.

Tuition fees for affiliate students

Tuition fees for Home fee status students taking a second undergraduate degree (regardless of whether they are taking the affiliate or full course) may be different to the standard Home fee. See the second undergraduate degrees page for details.

Year abroad tuition fees

If your course includes a year abroad, the tuition fee for that year is different. Currently, the fee for a Home student on a full year abroad is set at 15 per cent of the tuition fee for that year in Cambridge (please check the undergraduate tuition fees documents, in related links, for the most recent figures). Year abroad tuition fees for later years havenโ€™t been set yet but are likely to increase annually in line with inflation.

Tuition fees for international students

Tuition fees for international students vary depending on the course you’re studying. Most international students also have to pay College fees in addition to tuition fees. See international fees and costs for details.
