How to Pursue PhD in USA without GRE? - Leverage Edu

The popularity of the USA as a study abroad destination shows no real sign of waning, with almost 1 million international students at its universities and colleges. To put the sheer size of that figure into perspective, there are more British students studying overseas in the USA than there are total students at some universities in the UK.

It’s at PhD-level that the USA really shines though. America’s rigorous approach to graduate study delivers a standard of training and professional development that often surpasses the minimum requirement for a more ‘traditional’ research-focused doctorates in other countries.

Phd Programs for Medical Doctors in USA

Here are a few reasons to consider the USA for your PhD right now:

  • Accessibility – A US graduate programme takes longer than a UK PhD, but this can also help you find your feet as a PhD student. Instead of being required to focus immediately on your dissertation proposal you’ll have the time to first develop a more detailed understanding of your subject as the basis for your own research.
  • World-leading universities and research – Rankings aren’t everything, but the upper reaches of global league tables continue to be dominated by US institutions. Amongst other things, this reflects the country’s substantial investment in research output and expertise.
  • International community – US universities are used to hosting huge numbers of overseas students from countries across the world. Whatever and wherever you study you’ll be welcomed as part of a diverse academic community.
  • Innovation – The USA is more of a (post)graduate trendsetter than it’s sometimes given credit for being. America was the second country (after Germany) to adopt the modern PhD degree and its own structured approach to doctoral training is now influencing PhD study in the UK and Europe.
  • Breadth of opportunity – With 50 states, six time zones and thousands of higher education providers, it’s fair to say that student life in the USA has something to offer you, whatever you’re seeking from PhD study.

With so much to offer, it isn’t really surprising that the appeal of US universities is so consistent: easily trumping any obstacles that international students might find placed in their way.

American universities

Only around 1,500 of the USA’s 4,500 or so universities award doctoral degrees, but that’s still quite a lot of options to make sense of!

The first thing to do is identify whether or not an institution offers a graduate programme in your subject area. This is the best place to begin your search for PhD study in America. All PhD programmes take place at universities, but there are a lot of universities out there so narrowing down your search to where you’re most likely to find a place you will love studying at can save you a lot of time and hassle.

It’s hard work figuring out which schools to apply to, so here are some of the best places to start.

Public and private universities

US universities can be divided into two broad groups, depending on how they receive their funding and other income. This affects the fees they typically charge to students:

  • Public universities are administered as part of state university systems. Because they receive public funding from their state they charge less to local ‘in-state’ students. ‘Out-of-state’ students pay more, regardless of whether they are a citizen of a different US state or a country outside the USA (there isn’t a higher fee specifically for international students).
  • Private universities don’t receive any direct funding from their state (though they may benefit from federal research funds). This means that more of their income is derived from student fees, which are normally higher than those at public universities. However, private universities don’t usually charge extra to international or out-of-state students.

Other than fees, there is no hard and fast distinction between the kinds of graduate programmes offered by public and private universities – or their quality.

Public universities tend to be larger, with more students, but private universities are equally focussed on academic quality and are often run as non-profit institutions. In fact, many of the most famous and highly regarded universities in the USA are private.

Graduate schools

Graduate schools are specialised organisations set up by and affiliated with universities to run their graduate programmes. Larger universities may have several graduate schools focussing on different subjects, such as a Law School, Management School and so on. Smaller universities may have a single graduate school that administers all of their graduate programmes.

As a PhD student you may find yourself applying to one of these graduate schools rather than to the wider university it is part of. However, graduate schools aren’t a separate type of institution and it doesn’t generally matter how many a university has.

Human medicine is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the study of the human body and its health conditions, so that diseases can be treated and prevented properly. Human medicine is a health science follows the track set by biomedical research and is also connected to therapeutics, nosology, medical humanities, urgent care, pharmacogenomics, medical ethics and other fields.

The study of human health has been a sensitive subject even from ancient times, when traditional medicine developed. Phd After MBBS In USA

There are two ways to switch over to research leading to Ph.D. for meritorious MBBS graduates.

The main option is to get admission to a three-year medical postgraduate programme (MD or MS). Thereafter one can go for medical research leading to Ph.D.

Besides this, a few research institutions admit meritorious medical graduates directly for research programmes.

For example, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology under the Government of India functioning at Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram, offers major research programme in disease biology and molecular medicine as well as plant biotechnology and discovery.

First class (with 60 per cent marks) MBBS degree holders are also eligible for admission ( www.rgcb.res.in). This Ph.D. programme is affiliated to the University of Kerala.

Those having a valid research fellowship from UGC- CSIR or ICMR, category A of Department of Biotechnology are eligible to receive fellowships.

After PG courses

In India, an MD or MS is a postgraduate degree awarded to MBBS holders after three years of study. The research element is not prominent here, as these courses are meant to provide clinical qualification, resembling the professional doctorate degrees of the US. In surgery, orthopaedics and gynaecology, the equivalent degree is Master of Surgery (MS). DNB qualification (diploma of the national board) is considered equivalent to MD and MS. DNB can be obtained by clearing the centralised entrance test after completing three years of postgraduate training in hospitals recognised by the national board, New Delhi ( www.natboard.edu.in).

After obtaining the first postgraduate degree (MD, MS, DNB), one can go for further specialisation in medical or surgical fields. This requires three years of training and study and then passing an examination, both theory and practical. The degree awarded is DM (Doctorate in Medicine). For surgical superspecialities, the degree awarded is M.Ch. The DM or M.Ch. degrees are equivalent to the fellowship training in the US and are considered postdoctoral degrees in India, similar to Ph.D.

After MBBS, one can go for medical postgraduate studies (MD or MS) through an entrance test. At the postgraduate level, aspirants can specialise in medicine and surgery. PG programmes (MD or MS) are usually of three-year duration. The major specialisations include general medicine, general surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, ENT (ear, nose and throat), psychiatry and anesthesiology. Those with post-graduation (MD or MS) can further go for Ph.D. in any specialised area of medicine. MD or MS degree holders can complete the doctoral programme in two years. Postgraduates in medicine with 60 per cent marks are eligible to apply for Ph.D. Selection will be on the basis of an entrance test and interview.

Those who hold UGC- CSIR or ICMR fellowship can directly appear for interview.

Prominent institutions such as All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for

Medical Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, Jawaharlal Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh and Christian Medical College, Vellore provide research facilities leading to Ph.D.

Candidates who have an MBBS degree, one-year internship and a medical council registration are eligible for admission to MD, MS programmes.

For DipNB, one should have passed primary examination of the national board also. Duration of these courses is three years.

Eligibility for DM and M.Ch. programmes: MBBS degree, one-year internship and medical council registration.

For M.Ch. (Neuro) eligibility is MBBS degree, one-year internship, medical council registration and MD or MS

Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology is one of the prominent institutions in Thiruvananthapuram that offers DM or M.Ch. (3 years) courses. For DM, subjects available are cardiothoracic and vascular anaesthesia, neuroananthesia, cardiology, neurology, cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. For M.Ch., subjects available are vascular surgery, neurosurgery (after MS). Ph.D. programmes can also be pursued at the institute.

Research and training

Research on new methods of treatments, drugs and their effects are mostly done in research establishments and drug firms. Doctors often combine clinical and scientific work but there are research vacancies too for those interested in scientific research and development of medicine.

Some leading hospitals involved in research provide facilities in clinical research with fellowships in association with foreign universities. Medical graduates including MBBS holders are eligible to participate in clinical research.

Nano medical science

Meritorious MBBS graduates can opt M.Tech. programmes in medical nano technology or nano medical sciences. But limited opportunities are available for study. In Kerala, Amrita Centre for Nano Sciences under Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS),

Kochi, conducts M.Tech. nano medical sciences. Total seats: 20. This programme is fully-funded by the Department of Science and Technology. Meritorious M.Sc., MBBS, B.Tech., M.Pharm. and BDS holders are eligible for admission.

Selection is based on entrance test and interview ( www.amrita.edu).
