The program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy in Plant Breeding and Plant Genetics provides a broad exposure in the various disciplines involved with plant improvement. The program is truly interdisciplinary with faculty participants from agronomy, biochemistry, botany, entomology, genetics, horticulture, plant pathology, and statistics. Research areas include biochemical and molecular genetics, bioinformatics, biometry, cytogenetics and cytology, genecology, genetics, plant breeding, and quantitative genetics.
The Plant Breeding and Plant Genetics Program has been designated a UW System Center of Excellence. The 50–60 students majoring in the program come from throughout the United States and all over the world. Faculty have included members of the National Academy of Sciences, endowed chair professors, and recipients of the National Council of Plant Breeders “Genetic and Plant Breeding Award.” The University of Wisconsin leads the nation in the diversity of plant breeding programs and number of graduate students trained. Graduates are found in responsible positions with academic institutions, research institutions, and private companies involved in molecular to cultivar development work.
The Institute of Plant Breeding, Seed Science and Population Genetics of the University of Hohenheim is a leader in research and teaching, both nationally and internationally. Openness for reforms, practical orientation, scientific progress as well as co-operations with renowned companies and research institutions on national and international levels are the outcome of a strategy that has been pursued consequently since the Institute’s founding days. Foremost priority has been the training and education of excellent plant breeders, who have moved from Hohenheim to key positions in leading international companies and institutions. The four subject areas “Applied Genetics and Plant Breeding”, “Plant Breeding and Biotechnology”, “Population Genetics” and “Seed Science and Technology ” cover in a unique way the entire scientific spectrum relevant to plant breeding. By integrating the newest findings in the fields of cell biology, genomics and proteomics into classical breeding methodology, entirely new possibilities open up for developing tailored varieties. They are aimed at increasing the productivity, cost effectiveness and sustainability of national agricultural production and at securing the food supply for an ever growing world population. A team of highly motivated and excellently qualified breeding researchers is working at Hohenheim to achieve these objectives. - The applied breeding program deals with development of plant materials for greater yield, disease resistance, adaptability, quality, etc. and with studies of breeding methods and principles. Molecular and biochemical studies to identify and isolate agriculturally important genes seek to relate information from model species to crop plant genomes, to compare crop genomes, to assess genetic diversity, and to develop bioinformatic tools relevant to crop improvement.
- Conservation and evolutionary genetics of crop plants and their wild relatives is an additional topic of research. Many faculty members include both applied breeding and molecular study in their programs.

PhD in Genetics and Plant Breeding: Eligibility
Candidate must have passed their M.Phil or equivalent level examination with at least 55% (45% to 50% for reserved category candidates) of the marks from a recognized state/private/deemed or central University
- He/She shall not be having any backlog or compartment in any of the subject/subjects at M.Phil or equivalent level that is yet to be cleared at the time of taking admissions.
- Apart from the above-mentioned eligibility criteria’s various colleges and institutes may have their own additional criteria’s which the students would have to satisfy in order to take admission (Like work or research experience in the domain).
