The program of โ€œPhD in Remote Sensing and GISโ€ is a doctoralate course designed for students who want to pursue an academic career in developing technologies for the Earth observation. Different universities offer different specializations, however, the main perspectives of remote sensing and GIS research concentrate on solving environmental topics including global change, environmental-habitability problems, atmospheric composition and environmental disasters.

The good news is that the German government has decided to provide a PhD tuition-free for all students with a minimum income (depending on your field of study). This applies to both private and public universities and to structured PhD programmes.

The bad news is that you need to be at least 18 years old, have completed high school, and have a minimum income of around 70,000 Euros per year. And you need to choose one of these universities: Baden-Wรผrttemberg, Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse (including Frankfurt am Main), Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (including the Berliner Mitte district), North Rhine-Westphalia (including Dรผsseldorf), Schleswig-Holstein, Saarland (including the capital city of Saarbrรผcken), and Saxony-Anhalt.

Find all you need such as PhD in remote sensing and GIS in Germany, PhD in remote sensing and GIS in Europe, PhD in remote sensing and GIS in abroad, remote sensing and more on collegelearners.

remote sensing

Remote sensing is the process of detecting and monitoring the physical characteristics of an area by measuring its reflected and emitted radiation at a distance (typically from satellite or aircraft). Special cameras collect remotely sensed images, which help researchers “sense” things about the Earth. Some examples are:

  • Cameras on satellites and airplanes take images of large areas on the Earth’s surface, allowing us to see much more than we can see when standing on the ground.
  • Sonar systems on ships can be used to create images of the ocean floor without needing to travel to the bottom of the ocean.
  • Cameras on satellites can be used to make images of temperature changes in the oceans.

Some specific uses of remotely sensed images of the Earth include:

  • Large forest fires can be mapped from space, allowing rangers to see a much larger area than from the ground.
  • Tracking clouds to help predict the weather or watching erupting volcanoes, and help watching for dust storms.
  • Tracking the growth of a city and changes in farmland or forests over several years or decades.
  • Discovery and mapping of the rugged topography of the ocean floor (e.g., huge mountain ranges, deep canyons, and the โ€œmagnetic stripingโ€ on the ocean floor).

PhD in Germany

Hi there,

You can complete your application for admission to doctoral studies online. This usually involves completing an application which includes a statement from your doctoral supervisor, certified copies of certificates, proof of recognition of your qualifications from the Dean’s office, academic references and the university degree that enables you to participate in doctoral study.

A doctorate usually means that an individual is qualified to teach at a college level or to work in a specific field of work. There are two major types of doctoral degrees; a research-oriented degree, and a professional doctoral degree. Doctoral degrees are sometimes referred to as terminal degrees, which means that a final degree is available in a graduate school for students who wish it.

phd in geoinformatics in germany

Doctoral programmes concentrate on developing the capacity for independent scientific work and spans 6 to 8 semesters. The admission requirement is the successful completion of an eligible Masterโ€™s, Diploma, or Teaching degree. This course is completed with the academic degree of Doctorate / PhD. As part of the doctoral programme, students must prepare, present and defend their dissertation (final thesis).

PhD candidates typically are employed at the University of Salzburg through departmentally led projects, or are hosted at the department during supervision of work on students`own projects, frequently funded from international advanced training grants. It is possible to work towards a PhD while being employed externally in a related field, although such part-time PhD require a long-term effort and carefully managed research.

Careers in GIS and Remote Sensing

Doctoral Programme โ€œGeoinformaticsโ€

Geoinformatics and Geographic Information Science have evolved into a particular focus area at the University of Salzburg, managed through the Interfaculty Department of Geoinformatics. Research topics from the wide field of Geoinformatics are addressed  through an โ€œeducation through researchโ€ approach. The doctoral curriculum is focused on independently developing a thesis, parallel to completing a limited set of compulsory classes.

Currently research topics are centred around the eight research groups of the department:

  • CDL gEOhum
  • EO-Analytics
  • Risk, Hazard & Climate
  • Open Spatial Science
  • Landscape Lab
  • Geo-Social Analytics Lab
  • Mobility Lab
  • Spatial Simulation

Doctoral College โ€œGIScienceโ€

As a thematically focused group within the entire PhD programme โ€œGeoinformaticsโ€, the competitively selected candidates in the Doctoral College (โ€˜DKโ€™) in GIScience are funded through a national โ€˜education through researchโ€™ initiative. Additional supervision, monitoring and assessment procedures contribute to the quality of the experience and training of doctoral candidates. Since all funded positions have already been taken by the candidates the DK currently is not open for applications.v
