Then take a look at the International PhD Program at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). The DKFZ is Germanyโ€™s largest biomedical research institute and a member of the Helmholtz Association, the largest research organisation in Germany. The long-term goal of the DKFZ is to unravel the causes and mechanisms of cancer development and to identify novel tools for diagnosis, treatment and prevention. The DKFZ offers an international and dynamic work environment, providing you with access to state-of-the-art research facilities and exceptional resources.

Who can apply?

Requirements for applicants include the following:

  • University diploma/master’s degree (MSc or equivalent) with excellent grades
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Two letters of recommendation

PhD students at the DKFZ typically have a background in (molecular) biology, molecular medicine, biochemistry, chemistry, biophysics, physics, computer science, computational biology or epidemiology/public health studies.

What form does funding take?

The typical duration of the PhD programme is three years, during which time PhD students participate in the Helmholtz International Graduate School for Cancer Research. PhD students at the DKFZ are fully funded for the duration of their PhD. There are no tuition fees.

The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg invites international students holding a Masterโ€™s degree in (molecular) biology, (bio-)chemistry, (bio-)physics, computational biology, computer science, epidemiology/public health studies, health economics and related subjects to apply for the International PhD Program.

PhD students are supported by a Thesis Advisory Committee, participate in scientific and professional skills courses, attend international conferences and receive career development support. The language of the PhD program is English. Full funding is provided for the duration of theย PhD, either by the DKFZ, third party sources or in collaboration with the DAAD within theirย Graduate School Scholarship Program.

Research at the DKFZ is organized into the following programs with a lot of interaction and interdisciplinary PhD projects available across different topics:

Cell Biology and Tumor Biology

Functional and Structural Genomics

Cancer Risk Factors and Prevention

Tumor Immunology

Imaging and Radiooncology
