National and Texas State Certification Exams
Once you have graduated from an approved accredited PTA degree program in Texas you will then need to sit both state level and national certification exams before you can apply for your PTA license in Texas.
The state exam focuses on your assessing your understanding of local laws and regulations as they will apply to and govern your work practices, ethics and environment.
The National Physical Therapy Exams (NPTE) are developed and administered by the US Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) to ensure a minimum standard or knowledge and competence after graduation and before entering into the workplace.

Tarrant County College
The physical therapy assistant program is offered through the Health Sciences Department at Tarrant’s Trinity River Campus East. The PTA program ensures that students graduate with knowledge of the terminology, treatments and medications commonly used in the physical therapy field. Students also acquire hands-on experience with patients.
Associate of Applied Science in Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA)
The PTA program has a selective admissions policy. Prospective applicants must complete the general Tarrant County College admissions process plus 40 hours of observation and submit three references from the physical therapists that they observed. Additionally, applicants must score at least a 70 on the Health Education Systems, Inc. exam (HESI A2). In addition, applicants’ grades are considered when determining program eligibility. A drug test and a criminal background check are required as well.
This 6-semester, 2-year program includes four clinical experiences and coursework in pathophysiology, healthcare communication, patient care, anatomy, data collection and therapeutic exercises. The program is offered during the day, and students are required to attend Saturday classes during one semester.
