About pickaway ross programs

CHILLICOTHE – A new look to some of its labs and a new face to lead its secondary education mission will greet Pickaway-Ross Career & Technology students when they return to classes this week.

Jason Vesey, who for the last four years has served as director of the Ohio Valley Career and Technology Center in Adams County, has taken over as director of secondary education at Pickaway-Ross after Jamie Nash left the post to take over the leadership of Buckeye Hills Career Center. While no significant changes to career center programming are set for this year, Vesey said he wants to carry on what he said is the school’s expectation of excellence with a focus on meeting needs of local employers in skills gap areas while encouraging student participation in school organizations.

For the McClain High School graduate, that will start with building relationships with staff, students and area employers.

“I think a lot of that goes with listening and becoming acclimated with the culture here,” Vesey said. “There is a huge skills gap, and the programs that we have at Pickaway-Ross are strategically set up to hit those gaps. I know that our early placement percentage was extremely high last year here, and I look for that only to increase. The economy is on an upswing and our instructors are very active with their advisory committees which are made up of members of local industry and business. They meet regularly with the instructors here to come up with ideas for what needs to be changed in the program, what could be a new focus, what type of equipment do they need.

“So I think that tradition, environment, culture is already built in here, and I just look for ways to strengthen it, look for new partners in business and industry, look for ways our programs can become more modern to meet the needs of industry.”

One way that can be done is through adjustments to career center facilities. Over the summer, the school has expanded the size and added equipment for its welding and carpentry labs, as well as relocated its engineering and small engine labs to allow for more space. The cosmetology lab also was remodeled to incorporate a classroom learning space as well.

Besides those types of changes to the physical environment, Vesey said encouraging student participation in the various organizations available to them will be a part of his relationship building.

“One of the things that peaked my interest the most (in vocational education) was the career tech student organizations (CTSO),” Vesey said. “That is one area of passion that I have is to bring a focus to CTSOs so that our students get those opportunities to compete and excel. CTOs in career tech offer students so many opportunities — they get to travel, they get to go and meet students from other schools, they get to hone their skills.

“As part of those organizations, they get tremendous job opportunities and opportunities to continue their education beyond their years here at Pickaway-Ross. Things like that draw me to this career, and those are the things I cherish.”

Vesey got his undergraduate degree from Wilmington College and his master’s degree from Troy University, while getting his principal and superintendent training through the University of Dayton. His wife, Ali, will be a kindergarten teacher in Greenfield his year, and he has three daughters.

Vesey said Nash has been very helpful in his settling in process, as have fellow staff members Dana Anderson, Shara Cochenour, Polly Compher, Allen Kiger and Josh Younge. He also said the school’s maintenance staff has been instrumental in not only helping with the lab changes but also in making sure the career center itself is in good shape for students’ return.

As students return, they will notice some different traffic patterns in the area around the main campus on Crouse Chapel Road. Those heading southbound on U.S. 23 now have a new turn lane they can use to access Crouse Chapel Road, but those leaving the career center trying to access U.S. 23 will not be able to turn southbound onto that road. Those looking to head toward Chillicothe from the school should use Ohio 159 instead.

CHILLICOTHE – As Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center prepares for a new chapter of leadership in its secondary education program, it will look to expand on early successes of new programs incorporating students into the workforce.

Friday was the final day for Jamie Nash as the school’s director of secondary education. Nash, who had attended Pickaway-Ross as a student, has spent the last three years in his position directing programming for high school students at the school. He is leaving to take over the leadership of Buckeye Hills Career Center operated by the Gallia-Jackson-Vinton Joint Vocational School District.

“When I came here, my goal was to have the (superintendent’s) opportunity here, but Dennis and I, our timelines just never aligned, which is fine,” Nash said. “Dennis and I talked earlier this year about some (joint vocational school districts) and career tech centers’ superintendent positions that were going to be coming available. Dennis is the president of (the Ohio Association of Career Tech Superintendents), so I began to look at the options of what was available and accepted the position at Buckeye Hills Career Center.”

“I was real pleased for Jamie’s opportunity,” Franks said. “He’s a good match for Buckeye Hills. I know that district well, I worked there for five years at the beginning of my career. … He was ready for the challenge.”

Nash’s replacement at Pickaway-Ross, Ohio Valley Career Technical Center Director Jason Vesey, was selected from among 23 applicants for the job, of which eight were called in for an interview. He was awarded a three-year administrative contract.

“He was passionate about some of the strengths I was looking for,” Franks said of Vesey. “He was passionate about student organizations, he’s had success where he is in building that up, so I want him to continue making that a priority for us. He’s passionate about home school relationships, so he works very well with the principals and superintendents in the county where he works, so I’m assuming he’ll be able to do the same here. And, he has a good demeanor to lead the staff here, I think.”

Those skills will be needed to build on some of the initiatives that Nash, Franks, faculty and staff have been rolling out during Nash’s tenure. One of those key pushes has involved bringing introductory career tech programs into area middle schools. Presently, through efforts of staff members like Allen Kiger and Dana Anderson, there are 36 middle-grade programs operating under the purview of Pickaway-Ross in partnership with the local school districts.

“We want to get kids basically exploring career tech at an earlier age and get them exposed at an earlier age so they can make good decisions as they get into high school and go on into post-secondary education,” Nash said.

Those partnerships with local school districts involved other fledgling programs that have been gaining popularity. Presently, there are eight “magnet programs” involving such disciplines as sports medicine, robotics, engineering and health administration that are available to students that may not be looking to attend Pickaway-Ross full-time.

“Basically, they’re half-day career-tech programs,” Franks said. “They get the academics back at the home school or (Ohio University Chillicothe).”

Other initiatives either recently started or planned to launch in the near future include creation of career-tech pathways that establish programming a student can follow all the way from the seventh-grade through high school and even into a couple years of adult education and the creation of a pre-apprenticeship program in several career pathways. A senior credential program now in its third year, which offers an opportunity for area seniors with free time in their schedules to obtain an industry credential rather than load up their open hours with study halls.

Reflecting on his time at Pickaway-Ross, Nash said he’s been most proud of the growth in participation in student organizations and the leadership opportunities they provide, the roughly 65 percent of the student body participating in the MADE drug-free clubs program and the successes in job placement efforts, which in some programs has reached 100 percent placement for students.

Margaret M. McGarvey, 90, of Waverly, formerly of Chillicothe, went to be with the Lord at 8:13am Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at Southern Ohio Medical Center, Portsmouth.
