What is Public Health?
Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of families and communities through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury prevention and detection and control of infectious diseases. Public health protects and improves the health of individuals, families, communities, and populations, locally and globally.
Public health is a broad field. It is concerned with threats to health based on population health analysis. The population in question can be as small as a handful of people or as large as all the inhabitants of several continents (for instance, in the case of a pandemic). The dimensions of health can encompass “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Public health incorporates the interdisciplinary approaches of epidemiology, biostatistics and health services. Environmental health, community health, behavioral health, and occupational health are also important subfields.
A career in public health can involve working to prevent problems from happening or recurring through implementing educational programs, recommending policies, administering services and conducting research.
Unlike many other healthcare professions, public health isn’t focused on treating individuals after they become sick or injured. Instead, public health professionals work to limit health disparities and promote healthcare equity, quality and accessibility.
In the end, the purpose of public health is to improve and protect the health of people and their communities as a whole.
