The Master’s of Business and Science (MBS) degree in Analytics prepares students for data-driven decision making. The curriculum integrates courses in analytics/data science with courses in business and management, through a professionally guided curriculum and an emphasis on experiential learning.ย The MBS Analytics curriculum brings together the fields of computer science, statistics, machine learning, data mining and big data. Students will obtain a variety of skills including the ability to analyze large datasets, the ability to develop modeling solutions to support decision making, and a thorough understanding of how data analysis drives business decision making.
Program Highlights
- 30-Credit Program that can be completed in 3 Full-Time semesters
- All evening classes to accommodate Part-Time students
- Program qualifies for the DHS STEM designation giving International students up to a total of 36-months of practical training authorization without corporate sponsorship
With increasing data collection and advanced computational capabilities, the analysis of massive data and the extraction of useful information from it have become major emerging frontiers of computer science, statistics, and related fields. As modern information technologies relentlessly generate voluminous and complex data, analytical tools with solid foundation in algorithms, optimization, systems building, visualization, statistical theory, and methodology have become indispensable to industry and society in general.
Data Science has deep roots in computer science, optimization, probability, and statistical inference, and thus it is critical that any Data Science program enjoys a close collaboration between the Department of Statistics and the Department of Computer Science. Rutgers’s MSDS program does just that!
The Masters in Data Science Program (MSDS) offers a 30-credit Masterโs degree which will provide its graduates with:
- A deep understanding of the algorithmic tools and computational infrastructure necessary to manage, explore, and make sense of uncertain and complex data
- Computational skills to apply inference principles and prediction techniques to extract actionable value from data repositories
- Strong technical skills for data analytics, visualization, and summarization
- The necessary communication and leadership skills for successful careers as data science professionals
Tuition for the MSDS program is equal to the tuition rates for the FSRM program. Information on the costs of graduate study at Rutgers for the current academic year may be found in the New Brunswick Graduate Student Tuition and Fees Schedule. Rutgers also offers a cost estimator. (Alert: If you use the cost estimator tool, please select “Mathematical Financing” from the menu options, as the cost for the MSDS program is expected to be similar). When looking at tuition and fees, it would be best to look at the per credit tuition while keeping in mind that the program requires 30 credits to complete.
There are no scholarships, grants, teaching/research assistantships, or funding available from the program for students in the MS Data Science program. Students are expected to fund entirely the course of study at Rutgers. Those who have a grant or fellowship from outside or other sources are welcome to apply it toward the tuition cost of the program. United States citizens or permanent residents may be eligible to apply for various forms ofย student aid.
Please note that international students on student visas are not allowed to work off-campus during their first two semesters of study. Moreover, international students should not expect to work on campus, since there are few opportunities of this kind.

Undergraduates seeking a degree in data analysis, particularly as applied to business, can study for a Bachelor of Science in Business Analytics and Information Technology at Rutgers University. The degree combines the study of Information Technology, Data Analysis, and Decision Modeling. Respectively, these core areas involve learning how to collect and store data, detect patterns and trends and build an understanding of such, and apply gleaned information to real-world situations. The degree involves 35 credit hours of core classes and several pre-business classes in addition to the specific classes required to complete the degree. In total, students must complete 120 credit hours to earn a bachelorโs degree.
The Master of Information Technology and Analytics comprises 30 credit hours and can be completed in just a year. Students may also specialize in accounting analysis and its accompanying technology. This degreeโs secondary focus is auditing.
Rutgers also offers a Ph.D. program in Information Technology, which also encompasses the study of analytics. In addition to the dissertation, students will have to complete 20 or so courses, depending on approvals by studentsโ advisers. These include Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Independent Study in Information Systems.
