The degree offers an opportunity for the advanced study of developmental theory and research in preparation for a wide range of professional objectives involving children, adolescents, and families. Our program emphasizes scholarly reflection on developmental issues and academic excellence in oral and written communication. The program faculty values academic scholarship and research, and regards their application in professional settings as central to the mission of the MA program.
The program prepares graduates for a variety of life goals, including working directly with infants, children, adolescents, and their families. Child Development MA students pursue careers in program administration, parent education, research, community college instruction, and work in counseling, social service, non-profit and community agencies. The MA also prepares students for additional study toward a doctoral degree in child development, developmental psychology, or related field.

About
History
Founded as Sacramento State College on Sept. 22, 1947, during a time of intense demand for higher education after World War II, Sacramento State shared space with Sacramento Junior College. Sacramento State’s first semester of classes consisted of 235 students enrolled in 44 sections.
