SDSU Nursing Admissions Chances
San Diego State University is one of the larger and more selective universities in the California State University System. Roughly one-third of applicants are accepted. What makes the difference between an acceptance and a rejection? Unlike the University of California System, the California State University admission process is not holistic. Except for EOP (Educational Opportunity Program) students, applicants do not need to submit letters of recommendation or an application essay, and extracurricular involvement is not part of the standard application. Instead, admissions is based primarily on an eligibility index that combines GPA and test scores. The reasons why an applicant with adequate scores and grades would be rejected tends to come down to factors such as insufficient college preparatory classes, high school classes that weren’t challenging, or an incomplete application.
Be aware that San Diego State is designated as impacted for all majors and pre-majors because it receives more applications than can be accommodated. In addition, particularly competitive majors such as Nursing, Theater Arts-Performance, Music, and Dance have additional requirements for eligibility.
The green and blue dots in the above graph represent accepted students. The majority of successful applicants had “B+” averages or higher, SAT scores (ERW+M) of 950 or higher, and ACT scores of 20 or better. Higher grades and test scores improve your chances of admission significantly. You’ll notice that some students with lower grades and scores were accepted, and also that there are many spots of red (rejected students) in the middle of the graph. Some students with grades and test scores that seem to be on target for San Diego State University will still be rejected.

SDSU Nursing Program
BSN Overview
The Nursing Profession
The nursing profession is concerned with the total health care of the individual and the family. It is a profession which believes in the prevention of illness, caring for those who are acutely ill, and helping people with long-term rehabilitative problems to live in the healthiest way possible. Nursing is both a science and an art. It has its foundation in biophysical and behavioral humanistic sciences, as well as in specific nursing practice skills and techniques.
Nurses are in demand throughout the country and are needed in such settings as acute care hospitals, community health agencies, homes, jails, outreach programs, public schools, health maintenance organizations, and clinics which serve underprivileged, minority, and rural populations. Career opportunities are particularly good for minority, bilingual/bicultural persons.
The Undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program at SDSU
Students in the undergraduate nursing program are provided opportunities to acquire knowledge from the natural and social sciences; to develop critical thinking and professional decision-making abilities; to utilize current research in the application of the nursing process; to develop leadership potential and accountability in professional practice; to become aware of the emerging roles of the professional nurse and of the social forces and trends affecting health and health care systems; and to learn to balance professional and personal growth and values.
The undergraduate pre-licensed Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is available to incoming Freshman admitted via Direct-Entry, transfer students from community colleges and four-year institutions, and second baccalaureate students. Additionally, graduates of Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) programs and Diploma in Nursing programs may continue their studies to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree via the RN to BSN program.

does sDSU have a good nursing program
Career opportunities for nurses with advanced degrees are growing exponentially. The School of Nursing offers a graduate curriculum leading to the Master of Science (MS) degree in Nursing. This degree is available to qualified applicants who desire advanced professional roles in nursing. The graduate program requires a minimum of 36 units and is designed for either full-time or part-time study.
The program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) (1 Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530, Washington, DC, 20036-1120, phone: 202-887-6791).
Concentrations
A Master of Science (MS) degree in Nursing is offered for the following concentrations:
- Advanced Practice Nursing of Adults and the Elderly (NP/CNS)
- Nursing Leadership in Health Care Systems
* We have suspended admissions to our Women’s Health Program at SDSU and do not expect to reopen it in the near future.
Professional Preparation
Graduates of the nursing program are prepared for advanced professional roles as nurse clinicians, researchers, educators, and leaders in global healthcare.
NOTE: All arrangements for clinical experiences and preceptors are made by the School of Nursing.
LVN to RN Overview
The LVN-RN 30-Unit Option is designed as a career ladder for California Licensed Vocational Nurses who desire to become registered nurses. Upon completion of this program, an Associate’s degree in Nursing and/or Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing degree is not granted. Completion of the 30-Unit Option only allows students to become eligible to take the NCLEX for California RN licensure.
Per the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) website, most other states do not recognize California’s LVN-RN 30 Unit Option and will not issue RN licenses to these LVNs. It is highly recommended for LVNs to consider enrolling in an ADN or BSN program in order to obtain a degree and to have the flexibility to obtain an RN license in other states. Most ADN programs will give LVNs credit for coursework completed in an LVN program.
Space Available Basis
Students in the LVN-RN 30-Unit Option are not matriculated San Diego State University students and may enroll in required coursework on a Space Available basis through Open University with SDSU Global Campus Nursing coursework is reserved primarily for matriculated SDSU students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Transfer Students from Universities and Colleges External to SDSU
Students attending a regionally accredited college or university external to San Diego State University (SDSU) in pursuit of obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) are Transfer Students. Additionally, graduates of regionally accredited colleges and universities in the United States, and alumni of SDSU who are seeking a second bachelor’s degree in Nursing, are also considered Transfer Students.
