Seattle University School of Law

Introduction

Seattle University School of Law prepares great lawyers who are powerful advocates for justice. Our vibrant, intellectual community and rigorous program of legal education balance tradition and innovation to ensure our students receive an outstanding education and the practical skills to prepare them for a variety of careers in a changing legal profession.

Location

Located in the heart of dynamic Seattle, Washington, the law school is a vital part of the community. The lively Capitol Hill neighborhood surrounding the campus is a vibrant mix of culture, recreation, and entertainment. Consistently ranked one of the most livable cities in the United States, Seattle seamlessly blends rugged wilderness and urban sophistication. Home to Microsoft, Amazon, and Starbucks, the city provides our students with access to opportunities with major corporations, multinational law firms, and government agencies.

Sullivan Hall is an award-winning law school facility with a sizable law library, modern classrooms, a beautiful moot courtroom, and comfortable study and activity areas.

The law school also recently inaugurated a satellite campus in Anchorage, Alaska, where students from ABA-accredited law schools may spend a summer or the final year of study learning Alaska law and gaining on-the-job experience in the Anchorage community.

Admission and Financial Aid

In admission decisions, the law school places equal emphasis on three factors:

  1. LSAT performance,
  2. the undergraduate academic record, and
  3. personal achievements, especially talents or factors that contribute to our law school community in special and significant ways.

We also admit a limited group of applicants annually through our Access Admission Program, which addresses those cases in which traditional admission criteria are inadequate predictors of success in law school and in the practice of law. Members of historically disadvantaged groups are among those individuals considered for this program (limited to no more than 10 percent of the entering class).

The law schoolโ€™s Scholarship Program is among the most ambitious in the region, awarding over $3 million per year. Its objectives are twofold: to offer to all studentsโ€”regardless of economic or social backgroundโ€”the advantages of a private legal education, and to recognize and rewardโ€”regardless of financial needโ€”the achievements and outstanding potential of the most highly qualified students in the applicant pool. All applicants are automatically considered for scholarships.

The School of Law offers a Loan Repayment Assistance Program to support graduates who choose full-time public interest legal careers as licensed attorneys doing law-related, public interest work. It offers two annual full-tuition Scholars for Justice Awards to outstanding students committed to social justice work and the full-tuition Douglas R. Nash Native American Scholarship to an enrolled member of a Native American tribe.

Internships and externships are available at sites ranging from Anchorage, Alaska, to Washington, DC.

Our Students

Seattle University School of Lawโ€™s student body comprises about 650 students, representing more than 200 undergraduate schools. We serve an impressive body of students whose diversity encompasses age, life experience, and cultural heritage. The law school is recognized nationally for its diverse faculty and welcoming environment. It is the only Washington State law school with a part-time program geared to meet the needs of working professionals. Students may pursue a Juris Doctor or one of our joint degrees.

Faculty

Seattle University School of Law is home to an outstanding faculty of committed teacher-scholars. Our professors do not choose between scholarship and teaching, but rather are experts in their fields who are drawn to share their knowledge with students. Our talented faculty members teach students to analyze problems and construct policy arguments, as well as train them to write and speak with clarity and precision.

Academic Enrichment Programs

  • Academic Resource Center (ARC): This nationally renowned academic support program helps all law students achieve success. It includes a comprehensive Bar Exam Skills Program to prepare graduates for the bar and is home to the Access Admission Program.
  • Access to Justice Institute (ATJI): The mission of ATJI is to inspire all law students toward a lifelong commitment to equal justice. The institute connects students to public interest opportunities that fulfill unmet legal needs, such as helping connect clients who have pressing civil legal needs with affordable attorneys through our Moderate Means Project (MMP).
  • Center for Indian Law and Policy: The center is a focal point for an array of hands-on opportunities for law students, and provides direct services and information to tribal members and leaders as well as local practitioners. The center consistently develops new programs to assist Native Americans and gives students practical experience through innovative coursework and interaction with members of regional tribes.
  • Center for Law and Equality: The Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality aims to advance social justice by fostering critical thinking about discrimination in US society and through targeted advocacy to promote equality and freedom. The centerโ€™s work is divided into three units: research, advocacy, and education projects.
  • International Initiatives: Seattle University School of Law offers courses in International and Comparative Law, international internships and externships, and summer study in Madrid, Spain.
