BSU is consistently ranked among the Top 300 best universities in the Shanghai Physics Subject Ranking (ARWU). Since 2017, the leading university is the only one representing our country in this ranking. For three years in a row, BSU was part of the 401-500 group of universities. Since 2020, it has significantly improved its position to the 201-300 level and this year confirmed this high result, which is equivalent to entering the top 1% among 30,000 universities around the world.

Leaders among universities in physics are determined on the basis of five indicators: the productivity of scientific activity; normalized citation of articles in the field of physics; international cooperation; materials published by universities in prestigious scientific journals; the presence of scientific awards and prizes of international level.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), commonly known as the Shanghai ranking, is a publication that was founded and compiled by the Shanghai Jiaotong University to rank universities globally. The rankings have been conducted since 2003 and updated annually. Since 2009, the rankings have been published by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. 

The ranking considers every university that has any Nobel Laureates, Fields Medalists, Highly Cited Researchers, or papers published in Nature or Science. The Physics Section of the University of Geneva has a great tradition of excellence both in its research, as evidenced by the growing number of scientific publications, and in its teaching. As in the 2017 edition, the Physics area of the Federico Santa María Technical University is highlighted in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Subject, thee measurement places the scientific field at position 301-400 of the list and distinguishes the University among the 100 best institutions of higher education in the world in the areas of Automation and Control, Engineering in Mining and Metallurgy and Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

In this version of the Shanghai Ranking, 54 areas of universities around the globe were evaluated under the following criteria: publication of articles (PUB), citations in academic articles (CNCI), international collaboration (IC), publications in journals of excellence (TOP ) and awards for excellence (AWARD). It is within this framework that Physics – in Natural Sciences – achieves its best results in the IC and CNCI indicators with 94.1 and 70 points respectively; followed by 29.9 in PUB and 29.1 in TOP.

Regarding these positive locations in the ranking, the Director of the Department of Physics of the USM, Claudio Dib, points out that this recognition confirms that “we are on the right path and doing things right. It is an effort that must be maintained and try to continue strengthening. The Department of Physics in particular has always been vanguard in the University and the country, being a pioneer in areas such as particle physics, theory and experimental”.

In relation to the best score in the area, the academic adds that international collaboration and academic exchange are fundamental for research in any scientific field. “We are always looking for bigger collaborations because that is the way to grow and advance. Our link with the international world is, indeed, one of the things that has favored us the most. Once you start having good level contributions, the other collaborators in the world are interested and there is a greater chance of association “.

One of the most important collaborations of the Department is the participation in the ATLAS experiment of the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), among other notable collaborations in countries such as Germany, Brazil, Argentina, to name a few, in addition to large research centers such as the FermiLab and the Jefferson Lab in the United States.


Meeting high standards of demand

The Chinese ranking requires a minimum of 300 academic publications in the area of Physics to be incorporated into the prestigious list, which is limited to a universe of 500 universities. In this line, the USM stands out in the contribution of academic articles and citations in research of other specialists and disciplines. “Our specialists are repeatedly invited to give talks and conferences abroad, which reflects that they consider us a couple,” says Dib.

“Certainly this recognition is very valuable and, for us as scientists, it is very comforting because it accounts for the value of our publications in the scientific community. On the challenges post ranking, the physicist adds that “the most important thing is to have good researchers and academics. I believe that the main plan of action of a University is to try to attract the best professors and researchers, since they are the ones who propose the best projects, do the best research and attract the best students, generating a virtuous circle; I think that is the most important merit, “he concludes.

The Department of Physics of the USM offers undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs in the areas of particle physics, experimental and theoretical; the condensed, experimental and theoretical matter, which has specialists in Electronic, Magnetic, Optical, Transport and Thermal properties in low dimensionality systems and nanostructures, and the area of biophysics, related to soft matter and nanobiophysics.

In addition, among its postgraduate programs, the PhD in Physics, which is taught jointly with the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, stands out as one of the postgraduate courses that has the highest accreditation in the country.

The “ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects”, abbreviated to GRAS, is one of the major international university rankings, considered on a par with the global rankings produced by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and Times Higher Education (THE). In its latest edition, three Stuttgart areas were awarded top rankings among their peers in the rest of Germany, two of which even placed in the Top 50 worldwide.

Five separate indicators are taken into consideration when compiling the international ranking, the latest edition of which in 2021 evaluates more than 1800 universities from 93 countries in a total of 54 academic subjects, and examines the performance, quality and influence of their research in particular. 

Once again, the University of Stuttgart can be pleased about the excellent results from key disciplines in this global university showcase. For example, in the latest edition of the ranking Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering at the University of Stuttgart were awarded the highest number of points of any university in Germany. The performances of theses fields at international level is just as impressive, where they were placed 44th (Mechanical Engineering) and 46th (Civil Engineering), i. e. in the Top 50 out of 400 respectively 300 universities from around the world. The University of Stuttgart can also celebrate a good position in the overall ranking in the field of “Automation & Control: whereas it finished between 101st and 150th in the worldwide ranking, in Germany it was ranked third. 

More success in the individual indicators

If you also look at the individual indicators in the GRAS, other winners from the University of Stuttgart can also be seen.  In terms of the number of papers published in top journals, in the field of “Water Resources” the University of Stuttgart came out on top among its peers across Germany. Chemical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart also scored highly in terms of international collaboration, where it came third among German universities.

Global university rankings have achieved public popularity as they are portrayed as an objective measure of the quality of higher education institutions. One of the latest rankings is the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, which classifies institutions according to five fields –Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences– which are divided into 54 subjects. Despite being introduced in 2017, no study has analyzed the methodology applied by this ranking. The results of our analysis show that the methodology currently used by the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects presents several issues, which negatively affect a large proportion of universities around the world. Needless to say, if the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is meant to be global, it needs to expand its surveys to countries located in the Global South.

2019 ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects

On June 26, 2019, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the company that publishes the Academic Ranking of World Universities
(ARWU, aka the Shanghai Ranking), released the 2019 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS). Overall, more than
4,000 universities were evaluated and of those, more than 1,700 universities from 86 countries were ranked and
published across 54 subjects in five broad discipline areas. The University of Saskatchewan (USask) was ranked in 27 of
these subject areas, including five placements within the top 100 – 19 in Water Resources, 47 in Veterinary Sciences, 51-
75 in Environmental Science & Engineering and 76-100 in each of Agricultural Sciences and Public Administration.

For an institution to be included in any subject ranking, it needed to meet a threshold in terms of research publications
during the period 2013-2017. It is noted that the threshold may be different for different subject areas. The rankings were
then produced based on five weighted indicators: Publications (PUB), Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI),
International Collaboration (IC), Papers published in top journals (TOP), and Faculty awards (AWARD). Different weights
were allocated to the indicators for different subjects. For example, Publications accounted for 23.8 percent in
Mathematics, Physics and a number of other subject areas, but 48.4 percent in Finance, Public Administration, Sociology,
and Library and Information Science. Depending on the subject area, between 50 and 500 universities were ranked.
