Southern California University Of Health Sciences Anatomy And Physiology: Anatomy and physiology are the study of the body’s structure, how it works, and how it changes over time. By studying these concepts together, we can better understand how our bodies work in health and disease. The human body is made up of many different parts that are all connected to each other in some way. These parts include organs (such as the heart), tissues (such as skin), cells, and molecules. To be able to understand anatomy and physiology, you must first be able to identify these various parts of your body as well as their functions. The study of anatomy focuses on identifying these structures while physiology focuses on understanding how they function together. For example, when I say “heart,” you may know that it pumps blood throughout your body but do not know exactly what happens during that process or what happens if something goes wrong with it (e.g., heart attack).

The study of anatomy and physiology is a complex subject, but it’s also incredibly interesting. It helps us understand how the human body works and why it reacts to certain stimuli.

The study of anatomy begins by looking at each individual part of the body and then examining how those parts work together. You will learn about different types of tissue, like muscles, bones, cartilage and ligaments; as well as how these tissues interact with each other. The study of physiology involves studying how the body functions on a cellular level and how different systems interact with each other.

In both courses you will learn about:

-The nervous system: how it works and what happens when it doesn’t function properly

-The skeletal system: what makes up bones and why they are important for movement

-The muscular system: what muscles do, where they are located in the body and what happens when they don’t function properly.

Course Description

This course is the first in a two-part series covering the gross and microscopic structure of the human body and basic understanding of physiological mechanisms.

Course Structure

Lectures

Classes begin with intensive lectures (up to five hours) led by experienced instructors. Through a mix of presentations and small-group discussions, students learn to tie key foundational concepts to clinical practice and other real-world applications. Interactive Online classes provide group-based virtual learning through Zoom. Classes happen in real-time (i.e. in a synchronous format) with required attendance during a set schedule. Self-paced online classes allow students to study on their own schedule (i.e. in an asynchronous format), as long as students meet certain assignment due dates and communicate regularly with their instructor. Students will meet individually or in small groups with instructors as needed via Zoom.

Labs

Lab courses provide hands-on experiences that complement the lectures. SCU students enjoy dedicated resources, including chemistry, microbiology, and anatomy labs.

Due to COVID-19 requirements all labs are being offered virtually. The Department of Education has asked all schools to take into consideration these emergency circumstances related to COVID-19 and online instruction. You may want to contact your transfer to institution to determine their policy about online versus on-campus labs, which may change due to the global pandemic.

About the Human Anatomy & Physiology Online Courses

BIMD 220L (1 credit) and BIMD 221L (1 credit) accompany their 3 credit lecture components, creating a complete 8 credit survey of the anatomy and physiology of the major human organ systems and the foundational concepts required to understand them. The labs focus on quantitative literacy, histology, and dissection. 

These courses use a badge progression model, which is a method of gamification for learning. Content of these courses is divided into easily identifiable units called badges. By completing BIMD 220 and 220L, 221 and 221L students work their way through 14 content badges that represent all the major body systems. Students will always complete the Course/Set 1 topics first, regardless of which course they register for.

Students will be awarded badges by UND’s Teaching Transformation and Development Academy (TTaDA) via an email sent to their official UND email account. What can I expect in each lesson?

Students have 3 to 9 months to complete this course from the time of enrollment. You may work at your own pace and complete lessons on your own schedule, submitting up to three items per week for grading.  Each content badge will consist of the following elements located in TopHat and Blackboard:

TopHat

• AnatomyTV – These lab activities use a 3D modeled anatomy software program that is free for students with their UND log in. Students will be asked questions about relevant anatomy on images of dissected cadaver and asked to create images with this 3D model software
• Histology Labs – These lab activities will ask students to review series of labeled histology images before asking them questions about relevant microanatomy
• Biometric Data Labs – These lab activities will focus on quantitative literacy. Students will track their own physiological data or use existing data sets to further their understanding of physiological concepts. Relevant primary literature will also be incorporated.
• Dissection Labs – These lab activities consist of remote dissections of various mammalian organ systems. They are safe for students to complete in their home kitchens. Students will be asked to submit images of their dissection in progress.

Blackboard

• Badge Reflections – Students should complete these brief reflections in the Blackboard after they have completed all the  assignments in TopHat, but before completing the badge test. 
• Tests – After completing everything else for each badge students should take the tests in Blackboard. Tests consist of 29 multiple choice or similar style questions are 1 essay question. Exams are proctored using YuJa with Respondus LockDown Browser.

Required Textbook and Materials

These courses use TopHat and Blackboard. TopHat works through a student-paid subscription service. Students will be required to create an account and purchase a subscription to TopHat. Additional information is in the course syllabus and in Blackboard. 

How will the course appear on my transcript?

You may enroll at any time and have 3-9 months to complete this online course. The college credits you earn will be recorded on your transcript in the semester you register.
