Application Procedure

  • Create a personal ATLAS account on this website.
  • From your ATLAS account, complete a Bar Exam Application.
  • Electronically submit your application and pay the filing fee.
  • Upload required documents. Keep originals on handโ€”you must mail them to us upon request.
  • Arrange for third parties to provide documents to us.
  • Update your mailing address, email address, and all other information as needed while your application is pending.

Other Licensing Requirements.

To be eligible for licensure, you will need to satisfy the following requirements within 2 years of passing the bar exam:

  • Be certified by the Board as having present good moral character and fitness.
  • Score 85 or higher on the MPRE.
  • Satisfy the requirements of Rule 2(a)(5).
  • Be willing to take the required Oath.

The Texas Bar Exam is a 2 ยฝ-day exam, but will change to the UBE format in Feb 2021. Day 1 offers one 90-minute Multistate Performance Test (MPT) question and one 90-minute Procedure and Evidence exam consisting of 20 each Criminal and Civil Procedure and Evidence questions. Day 2 is the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question, multiple-choice exam. Day 3 consists of twelve Texas drafted essay questions. Twelve Texas Essay Exam questions (six in three hours in the morning and six in three hours in the afternoon).

What subjects are tested on the Texas Bar Exam?

Whatโ€™s the minimum score for MPRE?

A scaled score of 85 on the MPRE is required for admission.

How is Texas Bar Exam scored?

MBE is weighted 40%, essays are weighted 40%, MPT is weighted 10%, and the Procedure/Evidence exam is weighted 10%. The scores are scaled and combined to determine if a passing score of 675 out of a possible 1000 points was achieved.

When are Texas Bar Exam results released?

Results are released in early May for the February exam and in early November for the July exam.

Can I transfer my MBE scores from another jurisdiction?

Texas does not accept MBE scores from other jurisdictions.

What about TX Bar Exam reciprocity?

In order to be eligible for admission without taking the Texas Bar Exam, the applicant must be: an active member of a state bar and have been in good standing at all times, engaged in the active practice of law for 5 of the 7 years immediately preceding the application, and a graduate of an ABA accredited law school.
