The New School Film Program is a collaborative effort between The New School and the film industry to create a new model for educating filmmakers. The Film Program is an intensive two-year program in which students engage with the industry in a hands-on, mentored environment. Students complete their degree at The New School, and then enter into a paid internship program with one of our partner studios. We will also discuss the new school media studies faculty and the the new school graduate programs. Students are trained in both technical skills and critical analysis, allowing them to acquire a strong foundation in the art of filmmaking.
The New School Film Program is a three-year program that offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of film and media. Students in the program will be able to explore their interests in film, television, and digital media through coursework and hands-on experience.
The New School Film Program combines the resources of The New School’s College of Performing Arts with those of the College of Art and Design to create a unique curriculum that will allow students to develop their creative skills while learning about the history, theory and economics of cinema.
Students can choose from courses that cover topics such as screenwriting, editing, producing or directing; they will also engage with NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ renowned graduate programs in theatre studies and cinema studies.

About this program.
With a focus on independent filmmaking, the Directing Certificate teaches the essential principles of the art and craft of directing. Our instructors mentor students in the role of story, directing actors, and the aesthetics of filmmaking, as well as the practical responsibilities of the director in relationship to key positions on a production. Using the student’s own equipment, directing workshops offer a comprehensive hands-on component. Beginning with simple exercises, students progress to directing an original short film that is screened for an invited audience.

Taking courses and workshops really forces you to go out and start making small projects, building your way up to bigger shorts. It motivates you to just make something with your iPhone or DSLR and put it together to show in your next class. It’s a really empowering feeling that you don’t necessarily need all the budget, equipment, and people in the world. You can make something to take in to get feedback on and build off of each project you make.

This fall, The New School Film Program will be accepting applications for its Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking program.
The New School is a top-notch film school with a proud history of producing innovative filmmakers. Alumni include Spike Lee, Darren Aronofsky, Terrence Malick, and more. Their curriculum was designed with the goal of preparing students for careers in both independent and studio filmmaking.
The program offers two paths to earning a degree: one can either complete a thesis film or go straight into production on an existing project. Students who choose the latter option will work with an experienced team of industry professionals who have worked on projects like The Sopranos, Inception, and The Dark Knight Rises.
The program offers courses ranging from Digital Video Production Techniques to Advanced Screenwriting: Script Analysis & Development. Students can also take advantage of access to industry professionals through guest lectures by experts in their field such as Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean), David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook), and Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth).
