Tokyo Tech became the first university in Japan to establish Schools that encompass undergraduate and graduate education. Schools offer seamless curricula between bachelor’s and master’s programs and master’s and doctoral programs. Right from enrollment, students can clearly envision the possible academic paths that may be taken, allowing them to make diverse choices and challenges according to their interests and pursuits. Students who complete the credits of the courses required by their departments are eligible to graduate and receive a bachelor’s degree. International applicants may be admitted to Tokyo Tech via the methods detailed herein. Lectures for bachelor’s degree programs at Tokyo Tech other than GSEP are conducted in Japanese.

International applicants for bachelor’s degree programs may undergo the same screening as Japanese applicants by taking the National Center Test for University Admissions and the Tokyo Tech general entrance examination. Alternatively, international applicants may be admitted under the status of International Students. In order to do so, they must take the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), administered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), and Tokyo Tech’s Special Screening Examination for privately funded international students.

Entrance examinations are also offered prior to arrival in Japan for Japanese government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, hereafter MEXT) scholarship undergraduate students who have been recommended as candidates for bachelor’s degree studies at a Japanese university by the Japanese embassy or consulate in their home country, and for students in the Japan-Korea Joint Exchange Program in Science and Engineering.

For students from Korea: Japan-Korea Joint Government Scholarship Program for Students in Science and Engineering Departments

Based on the Japan-Republic of Korea Joint Declaration issued in October 1998, this program aims to enable promising Korean students to acquire cutting-edge technological skills and knowledge by studying at science and technology universities in Japan. Additionally, the aim of the program is to deepen mutual understanding between Japan and Korea through international student exchange.

Applicants are selected from students recommended by their high schools in Korea through a preliminary screening administered by the Korean government. These applicants then take an examination administered by the Japanese government, and successful applicants are then assigned to appropriate Japanese universities. Successful applicants undergo preparatory education in Japanese, specialized subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry), and English for six months, starting from March, before arriving in Japan in September. After this, they undergo further preparatory education in Japanese and specialized subjects at the International Student Center at their assigned university. Students then take the entrance examinations administered by universities specified by MEXT, and are admitted to the university concerned if they pass the entrance examination.

Graduate program

The Department offers master and doctor programs. The standard periods for master and doctor programs are two and three years respectively.

In regular program, both Japanese and English are used. A few positions of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, a.k.a. MEXT) scholarship are available, to cover Japanese language training, preparatory program called research studentship, and degree program (after admission screening).

You can also apply for International Graduate Program (IGP) without prerequisite of Japanese language skills. All lectures in IGP are taught in English. Several different sub-programs of IGP are available as the following.

  1. You can apply for the standard master and doctor programs respectively. Both domestic and overseas applications are acceptable. The application deadline is late May (overseas) or early July (domestic).
  2. You can specifically apply for Sustainable Engineering Program (SEP). SEP is provided as Integrated Doctoral Education Program, in which students are expected to study both master and doctor programs continuously. A few positions of the Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship are available. Only overseas applications are acceptable. The application deadline is December.
  3. IDE can offer a few full-funding scholarships by Asian Development Bank – Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) only for those who wish to enroll in master degree program.  Please note that the scholarship does not support those who wish to enroll in doctoral program.
