There are many reasons to study medicine in the United States. The quality of the education and training is among the best in the world, and there are many opportunities for research, work experience and postgraduate study. However, if you want to study medicine in Europe, you may be wondering about how your degree will be recognized when you return home.

If you are considering studying medicine outside of the United States, it is important to know that there are some medical schools outside of North America that have been accredited by an organization called the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). This means that they meet or exceed all of the standards set forth by the LCME in regards to curriculum, faculty and facilities. These schools offer students an accredited U.S. medical degree upon completion of their studies.

While it might seem like a good idea to study medicine abroad while getting a degree from an American school, it’s important to remember that not all schools are equal when it comes to quality of education and training. If possible, look into whether or not a school has been accredited by an organization like LCME before making any decisions about where to apply!

Medical School Transfer Eligibility

Students interested in transferring into medical schools like Drexel University, George Washington University, Mercer University, and Tufts University, are required to be transferring from an accredited medical school in the U.S., although George Washington University will also accept transfers from accredited schools in Canada. It is important that transfer students take the USMLE Step 1 Examination before entering the program at most medical schools that accept transfer students. If transferring medical schools, most only allow transfer students to enter into the third year of the program, though some, like Drexel, allow transfers into either the second or third year. For those schools limiting transfers to the third year, such as at Mercer, students must have completed two years in medical school. There are no options for universities that allow you to transfer to medicine in the United States; however, in places like the U.K., a transfer of program of study from Biomedical Science to Medicine is permitted.

Medical School Transfer Requirements

After establishing eligibility, it is important to understand what is required as part of the application process in order to successfully transfer. At schools like Drexel, George Washington, Mercer, and Tufts, transfer applicants must have the following:

  • Completed application with application fee
  • Transcripts from all colleges attended
  • Letter of recommendation or evaluation from the Dean of Students or Student Affairs at the prior medical school, indicating the student is in good standing
  • MCAT scores
  • USMLE scores

Other transfer requirements may include establishing residency in the same state as the university, like at Mercer, and the number of letters of recommendation or evaluation beyond the Dean of Students may vary from school to school.

Limits to Transferring Medical Schools

Although transferring during medical school is possible, it may not always be available. Schools like Drexel, George Washington, and Tufts allow transfers, but only if there are vacancies in the program. For example, for the 2018 application cycle, Drexel University determined that there were no openings in their program and did not permit any transfers; at George Washington, they closed transfer applications for the 2019 cycle. Some medical schools, like Tufts, hold onto transcripts until their third year classes start because openings can happen suddenly. Other schools, like George Washington and Mercer, make special considerations for students who show true need to be at that school. Mercer publishes a list of accepted transfers in recent years, and in 2017, only four transfers were accepted into their third year program, which shows just how few spots are available.
