Are you interested in bagging a Phd in bioengineering in UC Berkeley and you want to know about their acceptance rate? You will get all the information you need here on collegelearners including others like UCSF Bioengineering, UC Berkeley bioengineering ranking, UC Berkeley bioengineering masters.
The University of California, Berkeley’s Department of Bioengineering (BioE) was formed in 1998, making it the first new department in our College of Engineering in almost 40 years. It was created to support and enhance the highly successful UC Berkeley – UCSF Graduate Program in Bioengineering, which began in 1983 and is now our PhD program. The department is the sole administrative home for our Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Engineering (MEng) degrees, as well as the UC Berkeley administrative home for the Master of Translational Medicine (MTM) and joint PhD program (along with the UCSF Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences).
In the next five years, they intend to raise their international profile and impact to become one of the top three bioengineering departments in the United States. They want to do so by pursuing research and educational programs that open up new areas of scientific inquiry, drive transformational innovations, and build a community that educates and stimulates the next generation of bioengineers.
Using their faculty’s expertise in synthetic biology, biomaterials, stem cell engineering, computational biology, imaging, and instrumentation, they intend to play an international leadership role in two key areas: cellular engineering for human and environmental health, and technology development for personal and precision medicine.
They plan to expand their faculty and courses to create a curriculum that redefines the intellectual core of their field, a process that has already begun with the launch of the “Engineering Biology” series of courses, in order to support the unique educational mission of bioengineering and educate future leaders.

Course Description
- The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Bioengineering is a professional masters degree with a strong emphasis on engineering and entrepreneurship designed for students planning to move directly into industry after completing the program
- Capstone projects within this concentration have the potential of leading to technological and commercial innovations, specifically in renown Berkeley Bioengineering fields such as micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), systems and synthetic biology, and biomaterial
- Graduates of this program will have the combination of technical and economic understanding to quickly assume leadership roles in their engineering work, given their education here and Capstone project experience
According to data from the National Science Foundation and U.S. News & World Report, the acceptance rate for students in U.C.’s bioengineering Ph.D. program is 3.2%.
The acceptance rate may seem high at first glance, but it’s important to remember that this number is an average across all applicants—including those who applied multiple times or whose applications were incomplete. For these students, the acceptance rate is likely much lower than 3.2%.
The good news? You don’t have to be perfect! In fact, it’s likely that the people who are accepted into Uc Berkeley’s bioengineering Phd program are not necessarily the ones who have perfect GPAs or test scores—they’re just the ones who know how to present themselves well enough that their application shines through.
