University Of California Berkeley Scholarships For International Students

Funding an education as an international student at a university in the United States can be challenging. International students are ineligible for federal, state, and need-based university financial aid. Only U.S. citizens, eligible non-citizens and AB 540 eligible students can be awarded federal, state and/or institutional need-based financial aid.

We offer the following suggestions to international students:

  • Research scholarship opportunities from private organizations both within the U.S. and in your home country. As a suggestion to get started, consider your background, your future or current field of study, and possible career paths. Use these topics to search for organizations that may have some connection to your interests and background, then apply for available grants and scholarships.
  • Research the specific department you are interested in by doing a search on the main Berkeley website for their name, and then looking for awards or scholarships they may have for incoming students.
  • Graduate students can seek financial assistance from their departments, including Graduate Student Researcher and Graduate Student Instructorships, which are under the direct control of each department.

Students in the Schools of Law, Optometry, Public Policy, Public Health, Social Welfare, Information Management, and various programs in the College of Environmental Design, the Engineering Master’s Program, the MBA programs in the Haas School of Business, and the Joint Medical Program are subject to different tuition and fee schedules. Nonresidents of California in the professional degree programs will pay nonresident supplemental tuition and fees of $12,246 or $13,674 (depending on your program), in addition to the amount shown in the chart above. Double majors will have a pro-rated professional degree supplemental tuition amount, based on their two programs. What should I budget for my personal expenses? Personal expenses are expected indirect costs not billed to your student account. Your financial aid refund and/or work-study earnings, if you receive them, will help cover these expenses. You control these costs, so amounts will vary. Budgeting and a spending plan are key to managing costs like school supplies, off-campus transportation, and additional living expenses.
