McGill University Undergraduate Admissions

Application Process:

Create an online account at the official website to start your application after checking all the admission requirements and deadlines carefully.
Select a login ID and PIN and remember it for future usage.
Choose 2 programs of choice (for more choices, apply via a different application form) and fill in the necessary details including test scores and GPA.
Pay a non-refundable application fee while submitting the completed entry form and wait for a confirmation mail from the university.

Note: Unofficial transcripts can be submitted but original documents will be required during enrollment. University encourages students to upload all necessary documents through the university’s application portal instead of sending them through fax or mail.

McGill University Admission Decision

McGill declares admission decisions for international students within mid-December to mid-May. Decisions for transfer students are declared within Mid-February to Mid-June. Some of the programs have their own schedules for application decision. These courses include Dentistry, Law, Music and Medicine.

Tips for applying

Complete your application on a computer, not a smart phone. And please note that the online application is not compatible with Internet Explorer.
Keep track of your Login ID and PIN. When you create your account, you’ll be asked to select a Login ID and PIN. Be sure to save this information so you can log in to your application while working on it.
Use both program choices. You can include two program choices in your application for the price of one! And it doesn’t matter what order you use. Both program choices will be reviewed and you will receive a separate decision for each one (though you may not receive these decisions at the same time). If you want to apply to more than two programs, you’ll need to submit and pay for another application.
- Note: you will not be able to change your application program selections once you have pressed the Continue button.
Use an email address that you check regularly. We will connect with you from time-to-time through email to provide important information regarding your application and how to complete your file. Make sure you enter the correct email address and watch your inbox for notifications.
Tell us who can obtain information on your behalf. Include the name of your parent, guardian, school counsellor, or other individual who can receive information about your application in the “Disclosure information” section. How to apply for major entrance scholarships

After you submit your application for admission to McGill, you will receive an email acknowledging your application.
This email will provide you with your:
- McGill ID number
- PIN used to log on to Minerva
Log on to Minerva and go to: Applicant > Apply for Major Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship. Here is a sample preview of the application form (PDF). If you applied only to Law, you won’t receive a PIN to log on to Minerva. Contact the Law admissions office to apply for a Major Entrance scholarship.
You will be prompted to provide specific information which may include some or all of the following:
- A factual list of your school activities and community/volunteer involvement for the last three academic years (including athletic/artistic and other activities)
- A general essay either on a contemporary or historical figure that influenced/inspired you, or on a memorable event/experience which provided you with a new outlook on life
- A one-page letter of reference that you have written – for yourself – in the third person

- For applicants from high schools outside Canada and the U.S.A.: upload all your transcripts to Minerva.
- For US high school applicants (from a school located in the U.S.A.): self-report your grades in Minerva.

Your referees or school administrator must email your reference letters (and statements of rank, only if available) to scholarships@mcgill.ca (and quote your McGill ID number). These documents must be:

Applications for major scholarships are reviewed by members of the selection committees that determine the finalists. Finalists may be interviewed.

Students who apply for, but do not receive, a major scholarship will automatically be considered for a one-year scholarship. No additional application is required.

*All major entrance scholarship applications must be submitted online via Minerva, no later than midnight, Montreal time, on the deadline dates listed above. Any mailed documents must be postmarked no later than midnight of a given deadline. In the event that a deadline falls on a statutory holiday or weekend, the effective deadline will be the next business day.

Documentation requirements:

Two letters of reference: One academic and one activity-related letter of reference. Letters should be typed on letterhead stationery, duly signed and converted to PDF, then submitted directly by the referees to scholarships@mcgill.ca.
Ranking/Signed statement: A signed statement from your school indicating the size of your class and your class rank, if your school provides such information. All documents should be provided on school letterhead. Please note: If your school does not rank or if the class rank is available on a student’s transcript, there is no need for any statement.

After submitting the documents:

Documents submitted to McGill University in support of an application to be admitted or considered for a scholarship including, but not limited to: transcripts, diplomas, letters of reference and test scores (in paper or electronic format), become the property of McGill University and will not be returned to the applicant or forwarded to another institution.

Applicant-reported/uploaded grades are verified against official grades from the school or examination board. Should significant discrepancies or irregularities arise, applicants may be required to provide an explanation at any point. McGill reserves the right to revoke admission, scholarship and financial support, and registration in cases of misrepresentation.

Notification of offers

Applicants should regularly consult Minerva – My Financial Aid & Awards – for updates on the status of their application.

Only those applicants who receive offers of entrance scholarships from the Scholarships and Student Aid Office will be notified via email, at the address provided on the admission application. The scholarship offer letter will be attached to the email as a PDF. The letters are on McGill letterhead and include a signature; they can be used for official purposes. No paper letters will be mailed to recipients.

McGill University Application & Tuition Fees

Is there any application fees?

There is a non-refundable application fee for applying at McGill University. For application to graduate programs, international applicants are required to pay CAD 120.99, for which they can submit up to two applications for different programs at the same term. There could be additional fees for some programs.

For undergraduate-level applications, CAD 114.37 is charged as a non-refundable application fee. The students applying for undergraduate programs at the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry have to pay CAD 160.12. The applicants can apply to two programs at the same time. There is an additional testing fee of CAD 35.20 for B.Ed. TESL program. Also, there is an additional audition fee of CAD 70.41 for the application to the Schulich School of Music.

McGill University Scholarships & Financial Aid

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

Acknowledging the challenges faced by international students in pursuing a course, away from their home countries, McGill University provides a range of scholarships, awards and financial aids.

Entrance Scholarship Program

This merit-based entrance scholarship is given only to first-time undergraduate students at the university. Between two types of entrance scholarships, one is a non-renewable, one-year scholarship, valued at CAD 3,000 and the other one is a renewable up to three to four years major scholarship, valued between CAD 3,000 and CAD 12,000. Few faculties such as Dentistry, Law, Medicine, and Music have their separate entrance scholarships, for which students need to consult specific faculty websites.

In-course Awards and Honours

These awards are given to already enrolled undergraduate students who have excelled in their programs of study. These funds are deposited into students’ fee accounts and awards are recorded on their transcripts. Also, there are Activity awards that are given to in-course undergraduate students for their exemplary community activities.

McGill Financial Aid

These need-based financial programs are given to undergraduate students in the form of loans and bursaries.

McGill Funding

The funding for graduate students is managed by the university’s academic departments. The graduate students can expect McGill internal funding which can be availed at the time of application. All the students are considered equally and the funding is given to competitive candidates in the form of funding packages, including graduate assistantships.

The students in Ph.D. and thesis-based master’s programs are generally supported by McGill funding in the form of assistantships and fellowships. McGill University Application Process

When do the admissions start?

McGill University offers admissions in Fall, Winter, and Summer intakes. For undergraduate students, the online application for Fall intakes starts in October with an application deadline of January 15. Normally, McGill University doesn’t admit undergraduate students for the January session (Winter semester). Only a few exceptions are made for this session with regard to undergraduate students. Therefore, international students applying for undergraduate programs should aim for Fall intake.

For graduate programs, admission operates on a rolling basis. The application deadlines vary as per the departments and programs. International applicants are required to check the deadlines specified on the department page and apply early. The completed applications with supporting documents must reach the departmental offices before the specified deadline as late applications may not be reviewed for admission. Also, a late application will not be considered for a scholarship. As not all departments offer Summer or Winter admissions, international applicants must check the application deadline well in advance.
