Admission Requirements

All applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from the University of Alberta (or its academic equivalent from an academic institution recognized by the U of A) with an average GPA of 3.0 (or its equivalent) in the last two years of study. Since grading systems vary greatly from institution to institution, the U of A examines the content of courses completed elsewhere to establish equivalencies.

All Applicants:

MSc Program: A minimum admission grade point average of 3.0 on most 4-point grading systems, or a B on most letter grading systems.

PhD Program: A minimum admission grade point average of 3.3 on most 4-point grading systems, or a B+ on most letter grading systems.

GENERAL

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers graduate courses and provides research facilities for well qualified students of recognized universities who wish to pursue advanced studies leading to the MEng, MSc, and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering. In addition, the Department offers a program in Engineering Management to graduate engineers of any discipline, leading to the MEng, MSc, and PhD degrees in Engineering Management.

The general fields of study include solid mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, combustion, biomedical engineering, manufacturing engineering, and engineering management.

While the general guidelines for entrance and program requirements are listed below, specific details for each of the degrees are found in the document Graduate Program Manual for MEng, MSc and PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management, available from the Department. As well, currently active areas of research are documented on the Department’s home page.

ENTRANCE

The Department’s minimum admission requirements for degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last ★60 of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.

Applicants with exceptional or tenured work experience who do not meet the minimum admission requirements may apply for special consideration. Specific details are found in the document Graduate Program Manual for MEng, MSc and PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management, available from the Department or on the Department’s home page.

Where applicable, applicants must provide proof of English Language Proficiency (refer to English Language Requirement). Any one of the following is acceptable:

  • a TOEFL score of 93 (Internet-based) or equivalent;
  • an overall IELTS score of at least 6.5 with at least 6.0 on each band;
  • an overall minimum CAEL score of 70 with at least 60 on each subset;
  • an overall minimum PTE score of 61.

FINANCIAL

Financial assistance is available in the form of scholarships and fellowships (see Graduate Financial Aid section of this calendar) and through the Department in the form of graduate assistantships and contract research (available for Canadian students and students holding valid work permits). The assistantships are normally available to students registered full time in thesis programs; funding is not normally provided for students registered part time or in MEng programs. Summer assistance can sometimes be arranged for students without scholarship support who continue their research full time through the summer months. Engineering, MBA programs lead list of subjects rated among world’s best in 2018 Shanghai rankings.

The University of Alberta offers some of the world’s top programs in engineering, business, agriculture, nursing and earth sciences, according to the latest global rankings of academic subjects by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.

In the engineering category, UAlberta maintained its ninth-place standing in environmental science and engineering-ahead of Princeton and MIT-while mining and mineral engineering moved up seven places to 17th. Instruments science and technology ranked 29th, down one spot from last year, and chemical engineering moved up three places to rank 35th.

“Our faculty has been committed to creating extraordinary educational and research programs for decades, so you’re seeing the fruit of decades of hard work and continuous improvement in our programs,” said Fraser Forbes, dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

UAlberta’s business administration program improved on its strong showing last year, moving up one spot to finish at 17th place, edging out the University of Toronto by two places.

Other UAlberta specialities in the top 50 were agricultural sciences, retaining its 33rd-place ranking from last year; nursing, which slid six places to 38th; and earth sciences, which moved up to 46th place after placing in the 51-75 bracket last year.

Overall, UAlberta finished among the top 100 in 20 of the 54 subjects assessed for the ranking, which included more than 4,000 universities worldwide.

The rankings are based on five indicators: the number and impact of academic papers in each subject, percentage of papers with international authors, papers published in top journals and conferences, and the number of researchers winning significant awards in their fields.

The new Shanghai ranking follows on the 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject released earlier this year, which saw UAlberta rank in the top 50 in sports-related subjects (7), mining engineering (14), nursing (18), education (41), pharmacy and pharmacology (47), and archeology (47).

The 2018 Times Higher Education’s subject rankings placed UAlberta among the world’s top 100 in education (60); clinical, pre-clinical and health (77); law (83) and psychology (99).

The annual subject ranking is part of the Academic Ranking of World Universities, produced since 2009 by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an independent organization dedicated to research on higher education intelligence and consultation.

Other UAlberta specialities in the top 50 were agricultural sciences, retaining its 33rd-place ranking from last year; nursing, which slid six places to 38th; and earth sciences, which moved up to 46th place after placing in the 51-75 bracket last year.

Overall, UAlberta finished among the top 100 in 20 of the 54 subjects assessed for the ranking, which included more than 4,000 universities worldwide.

The rankings are based on five indicators: the number and impact of academic papers in each subject, percentage of papers with international authors, papers published in top journals and conferences, and the number of researchers winning significant awards in their fields.

The new Shanghai ranking follows on the 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject released earlier this year, which saw UAlberta rank in the top 50 in sports-related subjects (7), mining engineering (14), nursing (18), education (41), pharmacy and pharmacology (47), and archeology (47).

The 2018 Times Higher Education’s subject rankings placed UAlberta among the world’s top 100 in education (60); clinical, pre-clinical and health (77); law (83) and psychology (99).

The annual subject ranking is part of the Academic Ranking of World Universities, produced since 2009 by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an independent organization dedicated to research on higher education intelligence and consultation.

University of Alberta Acceptance Rate for Masters

For the academic session of 2019-2020, the University of Alberta received a total of 14,296 which is slightly lower than the last year’s count of 14529. This can be partly attributed to the latest graduate application system as per which the applications are directly scrutinized by FSGR. Previously, the applications were assessed by the respective departments before directing them to FSGR.
