What are the chances to get into this university?

Part Time Work While Studying

Can I work while studying here?

All international students who are enrolled in a full-time program and have a valid work permit are eligible to work in Canada. If any of the above-mentioned conditions are not satisfied, you will not be allowed to work in Canada.

Working On-Campus

If you are an international student studying in a full-time program with a valid work permit, you will be allowed to work on-campus irrespective of the program in which you are enrolled. You may also take up more than one job.

Number of work hours:

There are no legal restrictions on the number of hours one is allowed to work on-campus, as long as you are a full-time student. However, there may be union restrictions that you may have to follow. For more information regarding union restrictions, contact your on-campus employer.

On-campus:

Your employer can either be the University of Calgary itself or a vendor physically situated on-campus. The campus encompasses:

  • University of Calgary Main Campus
  • Campus at University of Calgary Downtown
  • Foothills Hospital portions (ask the prospective employer if they are inside the facilities of University of Calgary)
  • Stadium McMahon
  • Campus Spyhill

Study Permit:

Your work permit must state either of the following conditions:

  • “May accept employment on the campus of the institution at which registered in full-time studies”
  • “May accept employment on or off-campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186(f), (v)or (w). Must cease working if no longer meeting those criteria”

The above-mentioned conditions are required in order for you to obtain a Social Insurance Number. If your study-permit does not state either of the conditions mentioned above, you may have to apply to amend your study permit. While the process of amendment is free, it cannot be completed online, and the processing time can take up to a month.

If you, for any reason, change from a full-time program to a part-time one, you must immediately stop working. The same applies for if your work permit expires and has not been renewed.

Working Off-Campus

If you are a full-time student, have a valid visa and work permit, and are enrolled in a program at the University of Calgary that takes over six months to complete, you will be eligible to work off-campus.

Students not allowed to work off-campus:

  • Visiting students
  • Students enrolled in English Second Language (ESL) programs
  • Students registered in general interest programs that do not lead to a degree, diploma or certificate (example: open studies or continuing education students)

Working Hours:

You are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week during the study term. Only undergraduate students are allowed to study full-time during scheduled breaks. As most graduate students are enrolled full-time for the entire year, they are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week, including course-based Master’s students.

Work Permit Requirements

You do not need a work permit as your study permit is also your work permit.

Each of the following should be stated in your study permit:

  • “May work 20 hours per week off-campus or full-time during regular scheduled breaks if meeting criteria outlined in section 186(v) of IRPR”
  • “May accept employment on or off-campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186(f), (v) or (w). Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria”
