Mechanical engineers play an important role in designing and manufacturing everything from autonomous vehicles and supersonic aircraft to microdevices that are smaller than a human hair. Their impact can be seen in the development of new materials, processes and systems all around us.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers students the opportunity to pursue an exceptional, high quality education in Canada’s largest mechanical engineering department.

Our 1,450 students (1000 undergraduate and 450 graduate) learn in a thriving and dynamic environment emphasizing solid academics and sound hands-on skills. We offer traditional and co-op undergraduate programs (including a biomedical co-op option), as well as Master of Engineering, Master of Science, and PhD graduate programs.

Our students have exciting research and extracurricular opportunities; from the Undergraduate Research Program to the many student club groups focusing on robotics, autonomous flight, F-1 racing, rocketry, biomechanics, satelites, permaculture, hydrogen powered vehicles, and many others there is something for every student to be passionate about.

Our department is home to world-class research, with many of our researchers internationally renowned experts. Owing to the very high quality of our programs, the majority of our students experience excellent employment opportunities following graduation. What mechanical engineers do

Traditional roles

Mechanical engineers design and oversee the manufacturing of products ranging from medical devices to batteries. They design power-producing machines such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines, as well as power-using machines, such as refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, elevators, escalators, conveyor systems and automated transfer stations. Mechanical engineers use computers extensively to integrate sensors, controllers and machinery. They create and analyze designs, run simulations and test how machines will interact with connected systems.

Today’s emerging roles

Mechanical engineers often work on the newest industrial pursuits, particularly in biomedical engineering, automation and robotics. These engineers play key roles in improving the range and performance of hybrid and electric cars, advancing alternative energies, and creating solutions in bioengineering and nanotechnology.

Program overview

The MEng in mechanical and manufacturing engineering gives you a competitive advantage, whether you are focusing your career in a specific area or expanding your opportunities across sectors. This program is often completed in one to two years of full-time study, and part-time options are available. Taking your education beyond your four-year bachelorโ€™s degree, you will enhance your knowledge with 10 technical courses. This will enable you to expand or focus your career, depending on your goals, in a variety of sectors.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the professional MEng program in mechanical and manufacturing engineering, graduates will have a balance of the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required to work in a wide variety of industries in Canada, and worldwide. This includes, but isnโ€™t limited to, work in robotics and autonomous systems, oil and gas, renewable energy, clean technology, aerospace, biomedical engineering and nanotechnology.    

A course-based masterโ€™s degree in mechanical engineering is usually considered a final degree.

Admission Requirements

GPA

A minimum of 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 point system, over the past two years of full-time study (a minimum of 10 full-course equivalents or 60 units) of the undergraduate degree.

Minimum education

A four-year baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering, or an equivalent degree, from a recognized institution. Consideration is also given to applicants with a four-year science degree in mathematics, physics or kinesiology, or an equivalent degree, from a recognized institution.
