Chester Medical School offers a portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the biomedical and life sciences as well as medical practice, whether you aspire to a career in the biomedical, pharmaceutical or medical profession. We deliver a successful Physician Associate programme and are planning a graduate entry medicine course (due to start in September 2022 subject to General Medical Council approval). We have teaching and research facilities at Exton Park, Wheeler Building and Bache Hall in Chester. Our partner NHS sites include the Countess of Chester, Warrington and Halton, Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt, and Leighton Hospitals, as well as a range of general practices in the region. All programmes are delivered by highly qualified, research active staff with academic and clinical expertise. We also offer a number of programmes at University Centre Shrewsbury.

Chester Medical School is in the process of obtaining General Medical Council approval to deliver a 4-year Graduate Entry Medicine programme leading to the award of a MB ChB degree.  This will allow graduates to register with the GMC, and work and train in the UK or overseas.

One of the distictive features of our course is that we accept applicants with a previous degree in any discipline.  So, if you have a first degree in the arts, humanities or languages, you are eligible to apply. We welcome people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just science.

We are planning our first cohort of students to start in September 2022.  We will be open to applications once we receive GMC approval, expected by the Summer of 2021. After that time, international students will be able to apply direct to the University using a structured application form.  Please email Medicine@chester.ac.uk for further details.  Our admission criteria are planned to be as follows;

1. Academic Qualifications

• A minimum of an upper second class honours (2:1) degree (or overseas equivalent) in any subject.
• Candidates with a lower second class degree should hold either a Masters or a Doctoral qualification to be considered.
• In the case of an Intercalated Masters eg. MEng/MPharm, the equivalent of a Pass grade or above at Masters level (minimum 2:2)

2. UCAT

• All applicants must take the United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) or if appropriate, the UCATSEN
• The total UCAT score required to secure a place at a MB ChB Selection Centre varies year on year and is dependent upon the UCAT performance of all applicants.  The acceptable threshold score includes a verbal reasoning score at or above the mean for the cohort sitting UCAT in the year of application.

3. Work experience

• All applicants must complete 70 hours work experience across the 3 years prior to the date of application
• Shadowing a doctor/healthcare professional can only count for a maximum of 20 hours against the minimum requirement of 70 hours
• Applicants will be required to provide references to evidence work experience if invited to attend a selection centre

4. Reference

• Applicants must provide one reference from a person (not a relative or friend) who holds/has held a position of responsibility and who can comment on the applicants suitability for studying medicine.
• If the applicant has been in higher education in the last two years prior to application, an academic reference should be provided. 

5. Language test for international students

• International applicants will be required to submit an English Language test certificate confirming a score of (or equivalent to) IELTS 7.0 with a maximum of two component scores at 6.0 or 6.5.

6. Previous medical students

• Applicants who have previously studied medicine and have had to leave the programme of study due to academic failure without successful mitigation (in one or more subjects/modules/blocks) or due the findings of a fitness to practice hearing will not be considered
• Applications for deferred entry or transfers from other programmes will not be considered

7. Offer of a place

• All successful applicants will be required to apply for an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), payable by the applicant. International applicants will need to provide evidence from the country they are residing by following the advice provided on the DBS website
• All successful applicants must declare any and all, past or current, health, welfare and conduct issues that may affect an individual’s fitness to study medicine and practise as a doctor following successful completion of the course.

No place will be offered without an interview.  Interviews will be of the “multi-mini-interview” (MMI) style and further details will be available after Summer 2021.

Our 4-year graduate entry medicine programme will take its first cohort of students in September 2022.  Subject to approval by the General Medical Council, applications will be open for International Students from the summer of 2021.

Chester Medical School is based in the historic city of Chester, in the North West of England, close to the border with Wales.  We have many year’s experience of supporting international students.  The University and local communities are diverse and inclusive, whilst maintaining the characteristic features that attract  people from all over the World to study with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is your medical programme approved by the General Medical Council (GMC UK)?

We are in the process of applying for approval from the GMC for our graduate entry medicine programme.  We anticipate this will happen during 2021.  We will not be recruiting to this course until we have approval

When can I apply?

You will be able to apply as soon as we have approval from the GMC, which we anticipate will be in late 2021.  The first group of students should start with us in September 2022

Can I apply if I am a UK student?

The number of medical student places for UK students who pay UK fees and can access the UK student loans system is strictly capped by the UK Government.  Until we are allocated some of these places, our graduate entry medicine programme will primarily recruit full-fee paying students from overseas.  A small number of bursaries or scholarships may become available for UK students.  Please contact medicine@chester.ac.uk for further information.

Do I need do have done a science degree before applying?

No.  We take students who have a degree in a non-science subject.  Please look at our admissions criteria in the “Applying” section of our website.

What are the fees?

The fees for September 2022-3 will be arounf £40,000 per annum for each of the 4 years of the programme.  This will include the costs of all the clinical placements except the elective. 

What is your relationship with the University of Warwick medical school?

Warwick Medical School are acting as our contingency school.  We are using their curriculum under licence and they are providing educational support services to us as we establish our own programme.  The GMC requires all new medical schools to have an arrangement with an established UK medical school.  In the unlikely event that our own medical programme is unable to deliver the required standard of teaching, all students will transfer to Warwick and will complete their medical education under their supervision.
