The University of Cyprus (UCY), based in the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, is a dynamic, public, research-intensive institution established only in 1989. Officially recognized by the Yüksekögretim Planlama, Denetleme, Akreditasyon ve Koordinasyon Kurulu (Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation and Coordination Council of North Cyprus), Uluslararasi Kibris Üniversitesi (CIU) is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 15,000-19,999 students) coeducational Cypriot higher education institution. In the rankings announced by the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, which makes evaluations about sustainability in higher education institutions, CIU has risen up 155 steps this year and placed at 220th among 780 universities.
Prof. Dr. Serkan Abbasoğlu, Vice Rector of CIU and the Director of Sustainable Energy Research Center stated that they give great importance to sustainable resources as a university. The activities started under the main headings of energy and environment in 2009, and since then have been expanded to transportation, infrastructure, waste management, water and education.
It was pointed out that the institution carries out significant projects on sustainability and they make efforts to raise a society with awareness on these issues.
Prof. Dr. Abbasoğlu mentioned in his statement that the work is done in the international arena increases motivation and added: “CIU is the only university from TRNC that took a place in this ranking. We are in the 5th place among 43 universities in Turkey”.
Abbasoğlu also underlined that with the sustainable energy and climate studies started previously, they are ranked as the 1st in Turkey: “We are ranked 107th in the world in this area. This gives us confidence that we will soon make progress in other areas where we have been carrying out intensive studies as projects in recent years.”
The Sustainable Campus project is announced to be belonging to the whole university and the management only determines the vision and encourages the works to be done.
The projects were determined and carried out by students and faculty members and within the scope of this project as well as joint activities with many institutions and organizations including the Nicosia Turkish Municipality, Velospeed, and Taşkent Nature Park.
Prof. Dr. Abbasoğlu drew attention that the project is not only limited to addressing people living within the campus borders, but it also addresses the entire community. Finally, he expressed that it is an important cornerstone in the name of creating awareness and example in the area of sustainability.
