University Of Groningen Biomedical Sciences

What causes disease? What are the (epi)genetic background of disorders? How do microorganisms in the intestine contribute to health and disease? What are the underlying mechanisms of diseases and what novel strategies can be designed to cure disease?

During the Master’s degree programme in Biomedical Sciences you will be trained to find answers to these questions. The programme is strongly oriented towards the scientific background of health, disease and preclinical research. You will encounter an interdisciplinary environment of basic scientific research at the faculty of science and engineering and the more medical oriented environment of the university medical centre.

If you have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant biomedical area you can apply for our two-year programme and excel your career as biomedical researcher or biomedical specialist. We offer tracks related to biology of cancer and immune system, biology of food and nutrition, biology of ageing, and neuroscience. In addition, we offer the unique option to create a custom made biomedical programme that meets your ambitions. Examples are programmes dedicated to virology, (epi)genetics, regenerative medicine, big data management, computational biology and many other areas on which the University of Groningen has a world-wide leading position.

For those who have the ambition to go into industry, policy making, become a consultant, or pursue a biomedical position in any other field NOT related to research, we also offer the Science, Business and Policy (SBP) track. Both the research programmes and the SBP track are tailored to align ambitions and career perspectives of the individual student and are designed under supervision of an experienced (associate) professor.

An unique aspect of the research programme is that up to 75% of the programme can be spent on independent research projects in which you join a research-group to experience science according to the principle of ‘learning by doing’, under the guidance of a researcher. You will be embedded in a research group and fully experience what it takes to be a researcher. For those that have the aspiration to become an industrial researcher, there is also an option to do a research-project within a company.

In addition to offering research-projects we provide a variety of courses to learn about microbiota, computational biology, big data management etc… and any other novel area in the emerging field of biomedical sciences. Apply to our degree programme if you are looking for a dynamic and unique Master’s degree with great career perspectives.

Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences
Are you interested in the neural basis of cognition, the mechanisms of neurodegeneration or the evolution of behaviour?

In this programme, you can study the function and mechanisms of the brain and behaviour from three different perspectives:

Animal and Human Behavioural Neurosciences (B-track)
Cognitive Neuroscience and Cognitive Modelling (C-track)
Molecular and Clinical Neuroscience (N-track)
In these tracks, you will deepen your knowledge of the aims and methods of your chosen domain (See “Programme” for more info). In addition, thanks to integrated courses and links between tracks, you will get a unique opportunity to acquire multi-disciplinary skills and training in the neurosciences.

The main focus of this Research Master is to train students to become independent researchers. For this purpose, a large portion of the programme is devoted to two research projects (in total 70 ECTS) in which the students are embedded in research groups to conduct their own experiments. Students are encouraged to perform one of these research projects abroad.

The BCN Research Master is one of the best Neuroscience master programmes of the Netherlands (Dutch Higher Education Guide 2017 – Keuzegids Masters 2017).

Admission to the programme is selective, based on the applicant’s academic credentials and motivation (See “Entry Requirements” for details).

Why study this programme in Groningen?
