Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries: Candidates from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland are worthy for this position.
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: They can join a masterโ€™s degree program at the university.
  • Admissible Criteria: Aspirants must have to meet the requirements for obtaining an entry visa and residence permit for Finland.

How to Apply

  • How to apply: For taking this grant, participants need to take admission in a masterโ€™s degreecourse at the university. You will complete the fund application form with the same application form used to apply for a masterโ€™s course.
  • Supporting Documents: Academic transcripts, language ability certificate, copy of the passport, and curriculum vitae should be submitted.
  • Admission Requirements: Candidate must have a bachelorโ€™s degree with excellent result.
  • Language Requirement: If English is not your national language, then you are required to take TOEFL or IELTS test and show your English language proficiency.

The educational award is divided into three categories fully funded grant (Tuition fee + 10 000 EUR), full tuition fee Grant, and study grant (10 000 EUR) which will have the tuition fees range from 13 000 to 18 000 Euros.

The University of Helsinki is the oldest and largest academic institution in Finland. It has a student and staff population of 40,000, and is made up of twelve faculties including arts, education, law, medicine and science. It also has several research institutes and networks.

The University’s four main campus sites are all in and around the city of Helsinki. Their main campus is located in the city center, with further campuses in Kumpula, Meilahti and Viikki. The campuses include a number of state-of-the-art facilities, including the National Library of Finland, which is the foremost research library in Finland.

The Student Organization (StudOrg) offers a program of events including regular parties, excursions and sports. The students’ union also arranges events for students, and it comprises of more than 250 organizations, including academic and recreational clubs.

Cost of Tuition, Admission, and Scholarship

Annual tuition fees for foreign language Bachelors and Masters Programmes have been newly introduced and will begin from the 1 of August 2019.

This applies to citizens of non-European Union countries, the fees range from 10,000 to 25,000 Euros, the tuition fee comprises of Students Union Membership fee, entitles students to meal discount and reduction in transportation fares.

The University of Helsinki offers a scholarship to students from non-European countries to help cushion the burden of the prescribed tuition fees, Masterโ€™s students in their second year of Masterโ€™s studies are also eligible for the scholarship, the scholarship is either full, partial or covers the cost of living expenses.

Application Process

For Exchange students, universities in collaboration with the University of Helsinki send students nominations. The nominated students afterward submit their applications online and include the required documents in their application.

Decisions about acceptance are made by the Faculties of the University of Helsinki. Acceptance information is available about 6 weeks after the application closes. Accepted Students receive an automatic acceptance e-mail from their host Faculty. The applications process for Doctoral students can range from two to four months.

Masterโ€™s Program

The University of Helsinki also offers a Masterโ€™s program for the European Union, non-European Union citizens, Exchange students, and International students.

The tuition fee for the Masterโ€™s Program range from 13,000, 15,000, and 18,000 Euros per academic year. These fees do not, however, apply to Exchange, Ph.D. students and citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area.

Doctoral Degree

Persons who want to study a Doctoral Degree must make sure they are qualified to do so. They must either hold a Finnish Masterโ€™s Degree or a Masterโ€™s Degree that is comparable to a Finnish Masterโ€™s Degree (individuals who are eligible to apply for Doctoral studies in their home country can apply to Helsinki University). Language proficiency in Finnish, Swedish or English Language is compulsory for all applicants.

Language Requirement

Students seeking to gain entry into the University must show evidence of language skills, this requirement is for all students. Through the previous school, University education or standard language test.

Types of standardized language skills tests include TOEFL with a minimum score of 79 (Internet-based), a minimum score of 22 is required in the writing section. TOEFL (paper-based) need a 580 score.

Cambridge Advanced/Proficiency Examination requires A, B, or C grade. For the Academic Pearson Test of English, a minimum score of 62 is required. University Degrees either Masters or Doctoral Degrees completed in English in any of the European Union countries, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand is acceptable to show proficiency in the English language.

Workload

Students are to ensure completion of 30European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits in the semester. One ECTS credit equals 27 hours of work, this includes lectures and homework. The workload is large and students are to meet up with expected targets.
