Part 1. Application in Studielink
All students applying for a degree program at Leiden University must start the application process in Studielink.

Admission requirements
Do you want to apply for the bachelor’s program in International Studies at Leiden University? First, check the admission requirements.
1. Academic requirements
The diploma requirements for admission to the English-taught bachelor’s programs at the Faculty of Humanities are:
Dutch students:
- A Dutch pre-university education (VWO) diploma.
- A Propaedeutic diploma or final diploma from a University of Applied Sciences (HBO). Proof of your proficiency in English might be required (see below: Language requirements).
- A University first year certificate or degree.
International students:
- an equivalent of a Dutch pre-university education (VWO) diploma. Our admissions Office has drawn up a list of common non-Dutch diplomas that generally meet the minimum academic requirements. Additionally a good level of English proficiency is required. Specific requirements can be found under 2. Language requirements.
If your diploma does not meet these requirements you may still be admitted, on the condition that you sit additional exams. You will receive more information on this once you have applied.
2. Language requirements
It is essential that at the start of your program you have a good level of proficiency in written and spoken English, as the program is taught in English, and you will have to do all your studying and writing in English.
You do not need to provide proof of your level of proficiency if you:
- have obtained a Dutch VWO diploma
- have obtained a final diploma from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences (HBO)
- have completed your secondary or higher education in the USA, the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada (except French-taught programmes in Canada), Singapore, South Africa or Malta.
- have obtained an (English-taught) International Baccalaureate or an EB (European Baccalaureate) diploma with English as language 1
- have obtained a German Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife (Abitur) and English
was included in your final year at least at Grundkurslevel. - Exemptions may be granted on the basis of other educational diplomas. Check our diploma requirements list to find out whether your diploma might entitle you to an exemption.
If the above does not apply to you, you will have to provide proof of your proficiency, by means of one of the tests below. You have to register for the test yourself. The test results are valid for two years. Leiden University accepts three kinds of official tests:
- The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic modules only. Minimum score of 6.5 overall.
- The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Minimum score of 90 overall (internet based).
- We can accept the TOEFL IBT Special Home Edition™ and the TOEFL IBT Paper Edition for admission to the academic year 2021-2022, but not yet for 2022-2023 pending national decision-making. As soon as further information is available this webpage will be updated.
Institutional TOEFL tests are not accepted; - Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English/ Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (grade A-C) or CPE/CAE 180.

3. Admission via colloquium doctum
Colloquium dictum, which roughly translates as “learned discussion”, is a special admission procedure that you can apply for if:
- you do not have a diploma that grants university admission, and
- you are 21 or older on the day that your proposed study programme commences
As a colloquium doctum candidate, you have to sit a number of exams at the Dutch pre-university level (VWO) to determine whether you have the required knowledge to participate in a university degree program. If you are successful, you will only be admitted to the program for which you initially applied – not to other programs or other institutions.
Bear in mind that the colloquium doctum route can be very challenging, both during the admission procedure and once you begin your degree studies.
The colloquium doctum admission procedure
The colloquium doctum admission procedure is the same as the standard application procedure, so you can simply follow the steps in this guide. Be sure to check the colloquium doctum application deadline for your chosen program, which can be found in the program information. For most programs, this deadline is 15 October.
The amount of tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors. These are your nationality, your study program, and whether you have already obtained a Dutch higher education diploma.
Your nationality, study program, and previous Dutch higher education qualifications determine the amount of tuition fee you have to pay. There are four categories of tuition fees:
Tuition fee
- The statutory tuition fee
- The institutional tuition fee for students who are not nationals of an EEA country, Suriname or Switzerland.
- The institutional tuition fee for a second Dutch degree programme
Statutory tuition fee
The statutory tuition fee applies if you are going to follow a government-subsidized study program, which is not a second-degree program, and you are a national of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Suriname, Sweden or Switzerland.
The statutory tuition fee applies if you are going to study full-time or part-time.
- First year bachelor students The statutory tuition fee of the academic year 2021-2022 for first-year bachelor students is: €542*.
- For students who have already started a bachelor study but starting a new study programme, the statutory tuition fee for the academic year in 2021-2022 is € 1084*
- Students following the Liberal Arts and Sciences programme at Leiden University College The Hague (LUC) pay an additional institutional tuition fee of: €2,485 (2021-2022 academic year)
Tuition fee 2021-22: reduced tariff due to corona
Due to the coronavirus situation, the government has reduced the tuition fee for the academic year 2021-2022 by an amount of 1,084 euros. This reduction applies to both the statutory and institutional tuition fee, and also for non-EEA students and students following a second bachelor’s or master’s program. The tuition fee amounts you see on this website are the reduced tariff.

Students who are not nationals of an EEA country, Suriname or Switzerland
If you are not a national of an EEA country, Suriname or Switzerland, you generally have to pay an institutional tuition fee. However, if, on the basis of your Dutch residence permit, you are eligible for student finance from the Dutch education agency (DUO), you are entitled to pay the statutory tuition fee. Information on qualifying residence permits can be found on the site of DUO.
If you do not qualify for Dutch student finance and you are not a national of an EEA country, Suriname or Switzerland, you can find the amount of tuition fee you are required to pay for your study program here. These tariffs apply for both full-time and part-time studies.
Tuition fee 2021-2022: reduced tariff due to corona
Due to the coronavirus situation, the government has reduced the tuition fee for the academic year 2021-2022 by an amount of 1,084 euros. This reduction applies to both the statutory and institutional tuition fee, and also for non-EEA students and students following a second bachelor’s or master’s program. The tuition fee amounts you see on this website are the reduced tariff.

Second Dutch bachelor’s programme
If you are taking a second Dutch bachelor’s program, you will generally have to pay an institutional tuition fee that is higher than the statutory tuition fee.
If you obtained a bachelor’s diploma, doctoral, ingenieurs, or HBO-diploma (bachelor’s from a university of applied sciences) from a Dutch educational institution after 1991, and you are a national of an EEA country (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden), Suriname or Switzerland, the following institutional tuition fees apply.
