GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria awards this individual scholarship to foreign students from non EU-states. The award amount is € 363,00 one-time payment.

REQUIREMENTS

Foreign students from non EU-states who are in the 3rd semester with excellent grades in their major field of study and satisfactory grades in their other required courses and demonstration of need (8 ECTS points from the last semester), can apply for this scholarship. Students who already have a Master’s degree cannot apply for a scholarship for a further degree. This also applies to a doctoral degree.

Students can choose from 115 artistic, research-oriented, and education related programmes of study offered by a total of 24 departments at the mdw’s 11 locations around the city of Vienna. The University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (German: Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien) is a public university in Vienna, Austria. It was founded in 1817 as the “Conservatory” (Konservatorium) by Ignaz von Born and has been known by its current name since 1921. Today it is one of the largest universities in Europe by enrollment, with over 35,000 students. The Conservatory had a budget of €78.7 million in 2017, with an annual state subsidy of €19 million.

The university has been home to many famous composers including Robert Fuchs and Ralph Benatzky, who both studied at the university when it was still called the “Conservatory”. Master’s degrees were awarded to students who could demonstrate their abilities at sight-reading and composition. In 1879, examinations were abolished altogether, and from that year onwards only concerts were given.

In 1921 it was re-named the “Vienna Academy of Music” (Akademie für Musik) or Konservatorium Wien as it is known today.

In 1998 the university celebrated its 200th anniversary with performances throughout Austria.
