Program Aims
- Upon completion of training, residents will be proficient general internists prepared to go directly into independent clinical practice or pursue additional subspecialty training if desired.
- Every resident will be given opportunities to pursue additional training in at least one of the following areas: medical education, clinical or basic science research, or health care administration. Residents will become future leaders in these areas at state and national levels.
- Residents will adopt a philosophy of lifelong learning as emulated by all faculty.
- The program will be organized around a culture of mentorship, collaboration, camaraderie, and wellness.
- Residents will play an integral role in the promotion and maintenance of health in our community – particularly in meeting the needs of the underserved population.

Positions Available
The Department of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma offers 16 categorical, 8 preliminary, and 3 medicine-pediatrics positions each year. To fill our preliminary positions, we work closely with anesthesiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, radiology, and other residency programs. In addition, we offer preliminary positions untethered to a specific program destination.
Application Process
You must apply through Electronic Residency Application Services (ERAS). All applications must include:

All appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and applicants must register through the website. Interviews are by invitation only and based on academic performance, United States Medical Licensing Examination and/or COMLEX-USA scores, and letters of recommendation.
Applicants should schedule USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS (or equivalent COMLEX exams) and release their scores to ensure that the program can view them by mid-February to be considered for placement on the rank order list.
Program Eligibility
Current senior or graduate of an LCME-approved medical school (or osteopathic equivalent) or an international graduate with a valid ECFMG certificate and valid visa or permanent resident status are eligible to apply. International medical graduates are sponsored on J-1 visas. Applicants must be within five years of completion of medical school to be considered for a position. All appointments for residency are subject to ability to obtain unrestricted Oklahoma medical license.

Insurance Benefits
The University of Oklahoma offers a flexible benefits plan authorized by Section 125 (Cafeteria Plan) of the Internal Revenue Code. Each month, eligible employees receive an allowance of benefits credits. These credits represent the portion the University pays to provide benefit-eligible employees with the following core insurance benefits:

Long Term Disability Insurance – Provided by the College of Medicine to all residents. The benefits are paid at 60% of monthly salary. Benefits start after you have been totally or partially disabled for 90 consecutive days.
Employees are required to participate in the medical insurance plan unless they can show proof of coverage. If proof is provided, full-time employees receive a $50 per month opt-out credit. In addition to the University provided core insurance benefits, employees and their dependents have the option to participate in other benefits available at the employee’s cost. These include:

Professional Liability Insurance
The University provides professional liability insurance for residents applicable only to duties and assignments within the scope of the residency training program. Coverage amount is $100,000/$300,000, the amount of the resident statutory cap in the State of Oklahoma.

School of Community Medicine
The OU-TU School of Community Medicine hosts 8 residency programs and 6 fellowships along with a 4-year Medical School program. Residents develop their teaching skills as they work alongside OU SCM medical students and PA students in the inpatient and ambulatory settings under direct supervision of attending physicians. Teaching skills are taught formally as part of the academic curriculum and senior residents have the opportunity to engage in supervisory roles for medical and physician assistant students at the Bedlam Evening Clinic, a bi-weekly free clinic run by OU SCM for the uninsured.

The Schusterman Clinic, which opened in 2007, provides our patients with one central location that houses Internal Medicine, OB/Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry as well as in-house lab testing, radiology, and pharmacy services.
