The University of Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world, and is actually so ancient that its founding date is unknown – though it is thought that teaching took place there as early as the 11th century. 

It’s located in and around the medieval city center of Oxford, dubbed “the dreaming city of spires” by the 19th century poet Matthew Arnold, and comprises 44 colleges and halls as well as the largest library system in the UK. 

There are 22,000 students at Oxford in total, around half of whom are undergraduates, while 40 per cent are international students. A quarter of the city of Oxford’s residents are students, giving the city the youngest population in the UK. 

The University of Oxford does not have a main campus, its buildings and facilities instead being scattered around the medieval city center. Its colleges each have a distinctive character and traditions often dating back centuries. Colleges are self-governing institutions to which students usually apply directly. There are four academic divisions within Oxford University: Humanities, Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences; Medical Sciences; and Social Sciences. The university’s particular strength is the sciences, and it is ranked number one in the world for medicine.

Oxford is a youthful and cosmopolitan city with plenty to see and do. There are dozens of historic and iconic buildings, including the Bodleian Libraries, Ashmolean Museum, Sheldonian Theatre, the cathedral, and the colleges themselves. 

Students can choose to spend their time studying or avail themselves of the many extracurricular activities available. There’s a strong musical life at Oxford, with clubs and societies spanning all genres, from jazz, through to classical and folk. Oxford is also ranked highly for sport, with its top rowers taking part every year in the world-famous boat race with the University of Cambridge on the River Thames. Drama lovers are also well catered for, with one of the largest and most vibrant university drama scenes in the country.

Oxford has an alumni network of over 250,000 individuals, including more than 120 Olympic medalists, 26 Nobel Prize winners, seven poets laureate, and over 30 modern world leaders (including Bill Clinton, Aung San Suu Kyi, Indira Ghandi and 26 UK Prime Ministers). 

It has a friendly rivalry with Cambridge for the title of best university in the UK and is regularly ranked as being one of the top three universities in the world. Notable Oxford thinkers and scientists include Tim Berners-Lee, Stephen Hawking and Richard Dawkins.

Oxford university scholarship for nigerian students

One full scholarship is available for applicants who are ordinarily resident in Nigeria and who are applying to a full-time one-year master’s course within the African Studies Centre at Oxford. This scholarship is otherwise known as the Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Scholarships.

The scholarship is funded by the Imperial Majesty Oba Adéyeyè Enitan Ògúnwùsì and aims to provide funding to exceptional candidates pursuing the postgraduate study of Africa.

There is no separate application process for this scholarship: to be considered, submit your application for graduate study by the relevant January deadline for your course. Selection is expected to take place in April yearly.

Scholarship Benefits:

The Oxford university scholarship for Nigerian students covers course fees and a grant for living costs of at least £14,777. Awards are made for the full duration of your fee liability for the agreed course.

Eligibility:

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Eligible Countries: Nigerian students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
•  Applicants who are ordinarily resident in Nigeria and who are applying to a full-time one-year master’s course within the African Studies Centre at Oxford.

Standard Scholarship Selection Terms for Oxford University

Unless otherwise stated, you will be considered automatically for these scholarships if:

• You are applying to start a new graduate course;
• You submit your course application by the relevant January admissions deadline;
• You are subsequently offered a place after consideration of applications received by the deadline;
• Your application is not placed on a waiting list or held back after the January admissions deadline to be re-evaluated against applications received by the March admissions deadline; and
• You meet the eligibility criteria.

How to Apply

• There is no separate application process for this scholarship: to be considered, submit your application for graduate study by the relevant January deadline for your course. Selection is expected to take place in April. P

• Scholarship outcomes: Scholarship selection normally takes place between late February and June.

Oxford university scholarships postgraduate

Funding for graduate courses is competitive, but the University of Oxford offers more support than you might think. For example, for the 2019-20 academic year, just over half of our new graduate students received full or partial funding from the University or other funders.

The tabs on this page provide more information on the range of funding the University offers through scholarships, Research Councils and studentships.

When undertaking your funding search you should consider the following:

1. Do not delay! Start thinking about the different funding options available to you as soon as you decide to apply to Oxford – do not wait until you have an offer of a place. You need to ensure you have funding in place in good time to start your course.
   
2. Look for funding from sources both inside and outside Oxford. Receiving an offer of a place to study at Oxford does not necessarily mean that we can also offer you funding. However, there are a range of other options open to our graduate students. After you have read the tabs on this page about the scholarships, Research Council funding and studentships that Oxford offers, we also recommend you research external funding and loans for which you may be eligible.
   
3. Do not wait until you get here to think about funding for future years. The vast majority of Oxford scholarships are open to new graduate students only. Funding options for on-course students are extremely limited. You should therefore be confident that you can fund your whole course, including living costs.
   
4. Do not assume you can earn your way through your studies. If you are a full-time student, there will not be much time to take on paid work, and if you are a part-time student, you will need to ensure that work does not impact on your studies. See our Policy on working whilst studying.
