Faculty of Medicine – Historical Flashback The Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1985 in Larissa. At first, it was established in the refurbished building of the former โKatsigra Clinicโ and later also in two hired buildings. In 2008, new buildings (the University campus) for the Faculty of Medicine were erected on 100,000 m2 in the area of Mezourlo, which was granted by the Municipality of Larissa during the Mayoralty of A. Lamproulis. About the Training Center:
The University Hospital of Larissa, Greece is one of the biggest and busiest medical facilities, with a large academic profile, which has been designated as a tertiary, academic medical center. Neurosurgery constitutes one of the well-established medical specialties in our hospital. The catchment area of our facility practically includes the heart of the Greek mainland, extending from the western Greek coast to the islands of Skiathos and Skopelos east, and from Katerini and Grevena north, to the town of Lamia south. The population of this area is more than 1.5 M people. Moreover, our center constitutes a referral center for medically intractable epilepsy cases and offers a multi-modality treatment to these patients, complex head trauma cases and offers a well-established neuro-intensive care, complex brain tumor cases and offers a multi-modality treatment to patients harboring brain tumors, and complex neurovascular cases.
Program Details:
The duration of the fellowship can be from a minimum of 6 months to a maximum of 12 months. It is reminded that accommodation, as well as two daily meals are provided by our department. In addition, access to Wi-Fi and access to our medical schoolโs, and hospitalโs library are provided.
- Epilepsy Surgery Program
The subdivision of Epilepsy surgery of our department covers the whole spectrum of medically refractory epilepsy cases. The epilepsy surgery fellow is expected to familiarize her/himself with the management of patients with epilepsy in a tertiary setting care, offering multimodality management. In addition she/he is going to actively participate in the decision making process of the treatment of these patients. The fellow will be able to expose her/himself to all advanced neuro-imaging techniques, preoperative and intraoperative invasive EEG techniques, as well as to the whole spectrum of surgical resective but also neuromodulative techniques. Furthermore, she/he is going to be following the busy academic annual program of our department, including weekly lectures, video presentations, and vivid grand rounds, journal clubs and quality control weekly conferences. - Neurotrauma Program
The subdivision of Traumatic Brain Injury of our department covers the whole spectrum of nervous system injury. The traumatic brain injury fellow is expected to familiarize her/himself with the management of patients suffering head trauma in a tertiary setting care, offering multimodality management. In addition she/he is going to actively participate in the decision making process of the treatment of patients with head trauma. The fellow will be able to expose her/himself to surgical techniques of managing intracranial hypertension, intracranial traumatic hematomas, and complex cranio-facial trauma cases. Furthermore, with the precious aid of the intensive care department, the fellow will be exposed to modern multi-modality neuromonitoring techniques. Moreover, she/he is going to be following the busy academic annual program of our department, including weekly lectures, video presentations, and vivid grand rounds, journal clubs and quality control weekly conferences. - Neuro-Oncology Program
The subdivision of Neuro-Oncology of our department covers the whole spectrum of brain tumors. The neuro-oncology fellow is expected to familiarize her/himself with the management of patients with brain tumor in a tertiary setting care, offering multimodality management. In addition she/he is going to actively participate in the decision making process of the treatment of patients with brain tumors. The fellow will be able to expose her/himself to all advanced neuro-imaging techniques, to surgical techniques of brain tumor resection, intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring, as well as extraoperative electrical stimulation and mapping techniques. Furthermore, she/he is going to be following the busy academic annual program of our department, including weekly lectures, video presentations, and vivid grand rounds, journal clubs and quality control weekly conferences. - Neurovascular Program
The subdivision of Neurovascular Surgery of our department covers the whole spectrum of brain and vertebral column vascular pathology. The neurovascular fellow is expected to familiarize her/himself with the management of patients suffering intracranial hemorrhage, and patients with spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage. In addition she/he is going to actively participate in the decision making process of the treatment of patients with vascular pathology. The fellow will be able to expose her/himself to surgical techniques of managing intracranial aneurysms, intracranial and spinal AVMs, and cavernous malformations. Furthermore, she/he is going to be following the busy academic annual program of our department, including weekly lectures, video presentations, vivid grand rounds, journal club, and quality control weekly conferences.
