University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering offers one of the best undergraduate engineering programs in the world.   Admissions to each of the faculty’s 10 entry options is extremely competitive and the overall entrance average is increasing each year. As shown on the figure, the entrance average for 2018 was 93.6%. Following this trend, the entrance average for 2019 seems to be around the 94% mark.

International Baccalaureate (I.B.)

The completed diploma is required. In the year that the diploma is being completed, we will grant conditional admission to applicants with excellent predicted results. Final grades arrive too late for consideration. Students seeking admission to programs, which require Calculus, should present Mathematics at Higher Level. Math Studies is not acceptable for programs, which require Calculus.

United States

Admission to the University of Toronto is highly competitive. In addition to having achieved a high grade point average throughout high school, applicants must present good scores in SAT I (Reasoning) or ACT examinations (for admission in 2006, students should present the Writing Test if taking the ACT). Applicants must also present at least three SAT II (Subject Tests) scores or AP scores in subjects appropriate to their proposed area of study. Those seeking admission to Science or Business/Commerce programs are strongly advised to complete AP Calculus AB or BC, or IB Mathematics.

Scores below 500 in any part of the SAT Reasoning or Subject Tests are not acceptable. While many of our programs require higher scores, students normally present scores of at least 1,150 on the SAT I’s and 26 on the ACT. A minimum of 1,300 is required for admission to most programs in Engineering. In addition to meeting the above requirements, students seeking admission to Applied Science and Engineering must include AP or IB Calculus, as well as AP/IB or SAT II (Subject Tests) in both Chemistry and Physics. Students seeking admission to Engineering after one year of university in the U.S. are required to present a GPA of at least 3.5 with two semesters of Math, Physics, and Chemistry. Transfer credit towards Arts, Business, and Science programs is given for some Advanced Placement tests with scores of 4 or 5.

Admissions at the University of Toronto are moderately competitive with an average acceptance rate of 43%. As per 2019-2020 enrollments, the university has almost 24% of international students with China (13845), India (1553), the USA (931), South Korea (696), and Hong Kong (362) being the top 5 countries in terms of international students. The university aces in providing 700 UG programs in various disciplines and more than 300 graduate programs to study in Canada.

  • Application for MBA program at UToronto is open for the academic year 2021. Round 3 application for which will be available till March 8, 2021.
  • For students aiming to apply for the University of Toronto programs, the UG application fee is CAD180 and the PG application fee is CAD120, non-refundable.
  • For UG programs, the application process begins from September-October and the deadline is usually till early November. While some subjects have mid-January as the final deadline.
  • The registration for Fall Intake of PG programs starts in July and the deadline is between late-August to September. 
  • The application process for all UG courses is handled through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre. Whereas, PG applicants can directly apply to the University of Toronto through its application portal.
  • The University shares its decision regarding UG admission by February as most of the deadlines close by mid-January.
  • As PG programs have various intakes, expect a response within a month after the final deadline is over.

University of Toronto Admission Process

  • Complete the admission application and submit the required documents.
  • Apply for a study permit and entry visa once an acceptance letter is received from the university.

University of Toronto Admission Decision

The acknowledgment of the admission application is received by the students two weeks after the submission of the application with the details regarding the further application process, while the admission decisions are released between mid-December and late-May by the university.

The reviewing is done in the following manner:

  • Verifying whether the applicant meets the general admission and program-specific requirements of the university.
  • Verifying academic records of the students, based on the last 2 years of study.
  • Other contributing factors are consistency; where and when courses were completed – regular day school, night school, summer school; and the number of times any courses have been attempted.
  • A score of proficiency test (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.)

Visa Requirements

After receiving the acceptance letter from the university, the applicant will have to apply for a study permit to study in Canada to complete the admission process. It is recommended that candidates submit all the documents in time for getting their offer for admission, and pay their tuition fees to apply for a study permit with the Canada Embassy.
