Is University of Virginia a top tier school?
The University of Virginia (UVA) is a public university of around 15,000 undergraduate students. It is considered one of the most selective universities in the country and has been considered a Tier 1 university by several sources.
SOME NOTABLE FACTORS THAT COULD HAVE POSE AS THREAT BUT HAS BEEN HANDLED
The efforts to create a welcoming teaching and learning environment for all students have been so successful, Computer Science Department faculty have published research papers (read more HERE, HERE and HERE) and have earned National Science Foundation grants for promoting collaborative learning environments at UVA and for training high school and community college teachers to attract and support diverse students in computing, said James P. Cohoon, an associate professor of computer science, publication co-author and co-investigator on the grants.
The department also instituted mentoring programs for new faculty, pairing them with senior faculty who have training and experience in encouraging diversity. All undergraduate students who serve as teaching assistants also receive diversity training.
“As faculty, we feel a great responsibility to do this because the world needs more computer scientists, and the nation is not producing enough as it is,” Tychonievich said. “There is also a social equity issue. Since computers are increasingly doing more and more things for us, people of all backgrounds ought to have a voice in how they are created.”
Another addition at UVA was opening up computer science to non-engineering students. The Engineering School offers Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degrees to engineering students, and Bachelor of Arts degrees in computer science to students in UVA’s College of Arts & Sciences. The school also offers a degree program in computer engineering, which helps attract students.
The Computer Science Department’s INDUSTRIAL ADVISORY BOARD has helped send students to the the annual Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, a national conference and event bringing together about 20,000 people from schools, universities and industry to focus on the research and career interests of women in computing. Students attended last year’s Women in Cybersecurity conference, and the department funded the travel for the student team that won the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in 2018 – a team captained by a woman, then third-year student Mariah Kenny. (Read Mariah’s U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT OPINION COLUMN about women in cybersecurity.)
An incredibly important factor, Tychonievich said, is that UVA students have taken up the charge to diversify computer science. The WOMEN IN COMPUTER SCIENCES CLUB supports, celebrates and encourages women in computing, and hosts activities including mentorship and outreach for girls in elementary, middle and high schools.
At the Engineering School as a whole, these efforts are supported by the UVA chapter of the SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS and other groups such as WOMEN IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING.
“Our students are outstanding, and they are the best examples of why this is so important,” Norris said.
