The USUHS is also known as โAmericaโs Medical School.โ It was started by Louisiana Congressman F. Edward Hรฉbert as the โWest Point for doctors.โ Itโs located on 100 acres of wooded land on the grounds of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS)USUHS is the foremost medical education and research center for the U.S. armed services. If you are accepted to the USUHS, you will be an active-duty service member, and your education will be paid for by the U.S. government. The school accepts both civilian and military applicants for commissioning into the Army, Navy, Air Force, and U.S. Public Health Service. It is important to note that there is a growing interest in the school because there are a lot of enlisted members interested in becoming military doctors.
Since the school was established 40 years ago, it has produced more than 5,000 doctors, 70 dentists, 660 nurses, and 1,300 medical research doctors. All of them have become career military medical officers serving our nation. USUHS has a year-round, four-year program. Their program is 700 hours longer than any other U.S. medical school. Students come from all geographic, socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Letโs see what it takes to get into the โWest Point for doctors.โ
Do I Have To Be In The Military To Apply To USUHS?
No. Only about one-third of the students have had some form of prior officer or enlisted military experienceโbut you join the military ranks once accepted. Once you are enrolled in the School of Medicine, you will serve on active duty as commissioned officers. Either as a Second Lieutenant in the Army or Air Force, or Ensign in the Navy, or Public Health Service. Youโll also get full pay and allowances of an O-1.
What Is The Tuition For Attending USUHS?
Nothing! You pay no tuition or fees. As we just mentioned, youโll get the full salary and benefits of an O-1 for all four years at the USUHS. This includes free medical care for students and your eligible family members, a housing allowance, and 30 days paid leave each year. Thereโs moreโbooks and lab equipment are also included at no charge.
What Kind Of Military Training Do I Have To Go Through?
Before enrollment, you must complete a 2 to 14-week officer orientation program (depending on the military service). During training, youโll learn about the customs and traditions of military life and helps you transition to the military. You attend this training if you have had no prior commissioned officer experience. After training, youโll go to USUHS to start your medical education.
What Will My Pay Be After Graduation?
Once you graduate, you will begin your career as an O-3. Your base pay, housing allowance, and food allowance will be around $100,000 (based on the 2020 pay chart).
What Type Of Commitment Do I Have After Graduation?
Once you graduate, you will have a seven-year active duty service commitment. If you choose the Public Health Service, the commitment is a ten-year active duty obligation.
What Does It Take To Get Into The USUHS?
General Requirements
You must be at least 18 years old at the time of enrollment but no older than 36 as of June 30th of your enrollment year. You must be a U.S. citizen and meet the physical, medical, and security requirements for becoming a commissioned officer in the military. If you are already in the military, you must have approval from your military department as part of your application. This also applies if you are in one of the service academies, ROTC, or a member of one of the Reserve Components.
Test Requirements
You must take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and have a score that is not more than three years old. Your MCATs are just one of the gauges the admissions office uses to assess your applications, but a good score is important. The average MCAT for those accepted is 509. USUHS will not accept MCAT scores below 496.
Academic Requirements
You must have been awarded a baccalaureate degree from an accredited academic institution in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or Canada by June 1st of the year you want to start. You will also have to complete the required math and science courses to be considered for USUHS.
How Do I Apply To The USUHS?
You must apply through the AMCAS online portal using designation code 821. The USUHS takes part in the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS).
Complete the application by filling out the required forms and include the requested material, including a personal statement form and checklists.
After receiving completed AMCAS applications, the admissions committee will choose who they will interview.
The interview trip involves in-person interviews and a tour of the campus.
During the interview, you will rank which services you would like to join if you are accepted. Learn about the different Military Services.
If accepted, you will need to get medically and physically qualified.
Are There Other Ways To Become A Military Doctor?
Yes. You can apply for a scholarship through the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). Just like USUHS, your tuition is paid for by the U.S. Government, and you get a monthly stipend (income)! Medical training is the same as your civilian peers, but as an HPSP recipient, you have to go to a modified form of basic military training. Training usually occurs during your second year of medical school. During your third and fourth year clinical years, you get the chance to rotate at military hospitals if you choose.
USUHS vs. HPSP
Here is a side-by-side comparison between the two paths to becoming a military doctor.

I agree with Scott Welkerโs answer. USUHS is moderately hard to get into, but that isn’t the question you should be asking yourself. If you have good enough grades and MCATs to get into USUHS you can get in at other places.
The better question to ask is, do you want to be a military physician?
Yes, you get O-1 pay and benefits which and you donโt graduate with a huge ton of education debt, but you also have an obligation and its important that you donโt take that obligation lightly. It isn’t just paying back the time
Military physicians do everything their civilian counterparts do in all the spec

Not only did I go to school there, so did my daughter (and sheโs still there). As medical schools go, USUHS is moderately difficult to get into. There are easier schools, like Texas Tech, USF, Loma Linda or AHU if youโre Adventist, Eastern Virginia, UC Riverside, etc. And there are harder schools, like Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Duke, and the like. If you go by average entering MCAT scores, USUHS would rank about #40 in the nation. For more info, look at the US News rankings and you can sort them however you like.
USUHS is # 1 by far in one category though, LOWEST TUITION. How much, you ask? Try –

What is it like to attend West Point?
I am a West Point Graduate and also was a West Point Professor, so I can give a bit of insight.
First, let me say this: going to West Point is an honor and if you complete, you will have a very good education. But life as a Cadet is not easy and you may well hate every day that you are there. At the end, the rewards were worth it.
The West Point experience is designed to test you in everyway possible, to provide you skills with coping with extreme stress, to develop in you your leaderships abilities, to instill in you the ability to make the right decision regarding future actions and to giv

How do I get into West Point?
I’m currently a candidate for USMA 2021 and almost done with the process. As I was doing my application there were a few things that I really regretted and realized a few important things and Iโll share some of them with you and for future candidates that look on this thread.
First, grades. In my sophomore year I got greedy and took a bunch of APs and skipped a math level so I took AP Calc BC in my sophomore year. That didn’t go very well. On top of that I took Chemistry Honors and it was really hard for me to juggle my courses so I got bad grades in both of the two subjects. So I would really

Does West Point have any advantages over ROTC and if so what are they?
I am a USMA grad, and my daughter is in third year of Army ROTC and my son will be joining Air Force ROTC this fall. Both of my kids had the qualifications to attend service academies, but they decided against it, and I didnโt really push them, because the advantages of being a service academy grad is not as much as a lot of people think.
USMA grads are guaranteed active duty commission. In fact, it is a requirement. ROTC cadets have to compete to get active duty commissions. Otherwise, they can serve in the reserves. If you are committed, intelligent, and mature, you should not have any proble

What were some of the major factors that helped you get into the United States Military Academy at West Point?
West Point views applicants through what it calls the “whole person concept.” In short, you don’t have to be great at any one thing, but you have to be very capable at a vast array of things to be considered competitive. The key attribute, to be sure, is leadership.
I feel like my application was pretty strong relative to others in my class, but it’s hard to be sure. USMA is full of very capable people. The year that I entered the Academy (2003), Princeton Review called it the hardest university to get into in the country. I wear that as a badge of pride.
My grades were middle-above average

What is life like at West Point and after graduating? What does it take to attend West Point? Is it actually worth it to attend West Point?
You serve five years active duty after graduation, so thatโs your immediate life.
The admission process is rather strenuous and you have to get started early; two years before. Besides the nomination, the Academy looks at more than just grades. They want well-rounded individuals who do more than just crack the books.
Is it worth it? Depends on who you are. My 35th re-union is coming up in a couple of months. Listening to my classmates and other graduates, a prevailing theme is that it was definitely worth it but difficult.
Some people thrive there, but for most, itโs strenuous.
For me the main adv

Why would the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) disqualify an impeccable, highly-recommended candidate based solely on a one-time use of an inhaler three years ago?
I did not attend the USMA at West Point. My father did. He also taught there. As such, West Point has been a part of my upbringing and life since birth. In fact, when my son expressed interest in a military academy, I took him there, hoping he might consider the USMA. In the end, as it was for me, it was not a good fit for him and he selected another institution.
West Point, like the institution my son will attend has a daunting process to even be considered. Perfect grades won’t get you admitted. Neither will perfect health. Regarding your question, as to why a relatively minor health issue mi

How hard is it while you are at West Point?
A very personal experience, different for each person. Many shared experiences to be sure, but what is difficult for one might be the least challenging for another. Know that whatever your strengths and weaknesses, the system is designed to identify them, and in short order. And no matter how good you are at something, even up to this point in your life maybe the bestโ-there will be someone there who is better, smarter, stronger, faster. Whatever was the touchstone upon which you could always rely, you will find it insufficient. It will find your limits, which you will come to realize for the

Can I pursue medical school after Army ROTC?
As Skyler pointed out, it does truly depend on the MOS you are placed in upon graduation from college and your commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United Stateโs Army. In case you donโt know how it works, Iโll quickly explain the process to getting your MOS from ROTC. In essence, the MOS you are placed in comes down to how well you do in ROTC and in your college classes. At the end of your Junior year in college, you and every other Army ROTC Cadet across the nation will be ranked from the best cadet in the country to the worst cadet in the country. These rankings are a product of a few d

Do you have to attend West Point to be an officer in the US Army?
No. As basically covered in previous answers, the primary sources of US Army officers are the college ROTC (Reserve Officer’s Training Corps) programs, West Point, and the Officer Candidate Schools, whereby enlisted soldiers can make the transition to the officer corps. Also, certain professions needed by the Army can be accessed directly as needed with needed military training provided upon entry. In a wartime situation, it is possible for an enlisted soldier to receive a “battlefield commission”, usually to replace an officer killed in action before a normally commissioned officer replace

How do I boost my chances of admission to USUHS?
In addition to the usual premedical requirements, USUHS has a definite preference for those applicants with a previous military background, whether it is college ROTC or a service academy like West Point or Annapolis or actual active military service as an officer or enlisted member. Ultimately, they are hoping to find candidates who will spend their medical career in the military and become the future leaders. If you show up for your interview and you are clueless about the military, you chances of acceptance are not good. If you donโt make it in the first time you apply, discuss your applica

ADVENTURE
Maybe it sounds corny, but medical training through the military would offer a unique path, full of interesting travel, unusual cases, and novel settings.
Imagine practicing medicine in the wilderness, aboard a carrier ship, in a submarine, or inside a hangar of jet planes.
Some USUHS students get to travel to Central America on a ship for four weeks. Others are part of the initial response to public health and medical crises around the world, like ebola or hurricanes. One graduate became Saddam Husseinโs urologist, so you never know what youโre going to do.
You have to admit it sounds pretty cool – something more fun than usual before the slog of residency. Two USUHS graduates even became astronauts.
2. RESIDENCY ADVANTAGE
Speaking of residency, training through the military will make it easier to get into competitive residency programs.
There are exclusive programs just for the military match or special health professions programs; if you attend USUHS for medical school, youโll have the luxury of both the normal match system and the military match system.
Depending on specialty, this advantage can make it significantly easier to match, especially for the most specialized programs like orthopedic surgery.
3. LIVE AND PRACTICE IN CALIFORNIA
Most Savvy Pre-med contributors live in California, and we must admit itโs pretty nice. Great weather, delicious food, enormous diversity.
California is important for many students we work with, and USUHS could be an additional way for in-state candidates to hedge their bets.
There is a huge military presence in California: the Navy in San Diego (all specialties), the Air Force in Davis (active duty but working at UC Davis), and Camp Pendleton (family medicine).
4. GAIN A SECOND FAMILY
Medical school can be stressful and isolating, often reducing oneโs social life and sense of community.
But training through the military would let you be a part of another extended family, with the privilege of caring for soldiers – people who have sacrificed everything and earned the title of โhero.โ
Itโs rare to be able to serve the service-oriented, but military medicine gives you this opportunity. You can become a part of a long-standing tradition and find lifelong friendships with your cohort of peers.
Just a small example – the โHonor Saluteโ – when someone dies on the floor of a military hospital, everything stops. Everyone mans the rails. Everyone is at attention as the person is taken out in full silence.
5. GET PAID TO GO TO MEDICAL SCHOOL
For many candidates, this might be the primary selling point for applying to USUHS. Medical school is undoubtedly expensive, but this route could let you avoid debt altogether.
If youโre accepted to USUHS, youโre paid $64,000 (or more) to attend. It involves a 7-year commitment after residency, but youโre made a full-time commissioned officer. During your active duty, youโre given a tax-free housing allowance and free healthcare for you and your family.
