UT Dallas Engineering Ranking

The UT Dallas program showing the greatest leap in the rankings was the public affairs program in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences. It climbed 11 spots to No. 53. 

Two programs in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science also made big strides in the U.S. News rankings of Best Grad Schools released March 11. The bioengineering program jumped nine spots to No. 69, and the mechanical engineering program rose 10 places to No. 77.  

Overall, the Jonsson School tied with the University of Arizona and Stony Brook University – SUNY for the 64th best graduate engineering school out of 219 in the country. Additionally, UT Dallas has the highest-ranked engineering graduate program in North Texas. Statewide, it trailed only UT Austin, Texas A&M University and Rice University.

Other ranked Jonsson School programs were: computer engineering at No. 52, electrical engineering at No. 53 and materials science and engineering at No. 70.

The Naveen Jindal School of Management also made the grade, climbing two spots to No. 38 in the category of Best Business Schools, a ranking that placed it in the top 10 percent of the 475 schools surveyed across the country. It tied for 38th with Michigan State University and placed third in Texas only behind UT Austin and Rice.

UT Dallas Engineering Admissions Chances

The University of Texas at Dallas, which accepts over three-quarters of applicants, has a somewhat selective admissions process. If your SAT/ACT scores and GPA fall within the school’s average ranges, you have a strong chance of being accepted. However, UT Dallas is interested in more than test scores and GPAs. The university uses the ApplyTexas application which requires information about your high school coursework and extracurricular activities. The admissions office wants to see that you have taken challenging college preparatory classes and have an upward trend in grades. Applicants should also consider including an optional essay, letters of recommendation, and resume to boost their application. Students who attend an accredited public or private high school in Texas, rank in the top 10% of their class, and achieve the “Distinguished Level of Achievement”, are eligible for automatic admission to UT Dallas.

The Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at University of Texas–Dallas (Jonsson) has an application deadline of May 1. The application fee is $50 for U.S. residents and $100 for international students. Its tuition is full-time: $14,560 per year (in-state) and full-time: $28,610 per year (out-of-state). The 2020 Ph.D. student-faculty ratio is 3.6:1. The Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at University of Texas–Dallas (Jonsson) has 152 full-time faculty on staff.

The Jindal School’s information systems program was ranked 17th, and its accounting program was 47th. In addition, the supply chain management program took the No. 20 spot. UT Dallas’ part-time MBA climbed three spots to No. 17 and tied with Georgia Institute of Technology, Rice, the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Washington University in St. Louis.

A review of the University’s top five majors by enrollment – computer science, accounting, biology, electrical engineering and finance – indicates UT Dallas bachelor’s degree holders in those fields will find starting salaries averaging from $32,549 for biology, to $58,967 for computer science, to $61,156 for electrical engineering. Those who go on to medical training or master’s degrees will see yet higher salaries when they enter the job market.

This immediate earning potential and a very low percentage of students who carry any debt at all, at 36 percent compared to a national average of 71 percent, have earned the attention of both The Princeton Review and Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. Each publication has ranked UT Dallas among the best college values for the past two years.

Those graduating with degrees in the University’s five most popular majors, which draw about 30 percent of the students on campus, say the encouraging statistics match their experiences.

For finance senior Jacob Craft, a job offer came a few months before his graduation this week from the Naveen Jindal School of Management. What began as an internship at a private equity firm in January quickly turned into a full-time job, with the company accommodating his class schedule as he finished his degree.

Craft graduated from high school at age 16 and ran his own business as a contractor for an asset management company for about five years, earning an associate’s degree from Collin College before transferring to UT Dallas in 2012. While at the University, he’s been heavily involved in campus activities, including the Financial Leadership Association.

“UT Dallas gave me the opportunity to come out of my shell,” Craft said. “I never dreamed I would learn as much as I did, not just from an academic standpoint but about life in general.

“The professors care about the students. For those students who are willing to apply themselves, there are so many resources at UT Dallas to utilize.”

Duy-Anh (Tommy) Tran, a computer science senior, also found success on the job as an undergraduate. He has participated in paid internships with major companies while he earned his bachelor’s degree, which includes a minor in enterprise systems. Although he’s confident of his full-time job prospects after graduation, Tran said he will take an additional year to finish a fast-track master’s degree in systems engineering and management at UT Dallas.

“My internships have been great on-the-job experiences, but they’ve also been very good for making professional contacts, which is important,” Tran said.

Craft and Tran are among the majority of UT Dallas students who will graduate with no student debt. In addition to the overall value rankings, U.S. News and World Report also recently gave high marks to the University for having such a low percentage of students with debt, as well as a low average debt for those who do borrow. For UT Dallas students who carry debt, the average is $17,516, compared to the national average of about $29,400.

University of Dallas Engineering

The addition of the new Engineering Building, primarily for the use of the Mechanical Engineering Department, will give UT Dallas the ability to accommodate expanding student enrollment, hire additional faculty, increase degree production, improve graduation rates and increase externally funded research. The new space will include classrooms, a 300-seat lecture hall,offices and conference space. It will also house materials, fluid, heat transfer, energy research nano-bio research, robotics research and computer labs.

UT Dallas Biomedical Engineering

A degree in biomedical engineering provides students with a strong foundation in engineering, mathematics, chemistry and biology and teaches them how to solve complex engineering problems in medicine. Rigorous lecture courses provide students the knowledge necessary to succeed in biomedical engineering careers, medical school and graduate school. Laboratory courses engage students to solve complex biomedical engineering problems, communicate effectively and work in complex and dynamic teams.

Engineering education requires strong high school preparation. Students interested in a biomedical engineering path should have at least one semester of trigonometry and at least one year each of elementary algebra, intermediate and advanced algebra, plane geometry, chemistry and physics, to develop their competencies to the highest possible levels to prepare them to move into demanding college courses in calculus, calculus-based physics and chemistry for science majors. It’s also essential that students have the competence to read and comprehend rapidly, and to write clearly and correctly.

The Jonsson School operates one of the largest internship and cooperative education programs of its kind, averaging more than 1,200 undergraduate and graduate student placements a year at Dallas-area high-tech companies, including Texas Instruments, Intel, Raytheon, Alcatel-Lucent and IBM.
