The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University is among the most prominent veterinary teaching institutions in Europe. It has developed a unique curriculum that prepares students for a career in veterinary medicine or science. The combination of practical work and academic studies allows students to develop deep knowledge and practical skills, while developing their communication skills at an early stage.

The faculty occupies its own campus with state-of-the-art facilities. These include: five large animal hospitals; two small animal hospitals; three central laboratories (genetics, microbiology and biochemistry); six teaching departments (zoology, epidemiology & public health; animal physiology & welfare); one biotechnology department; one research centre for food safety research & innovation (CRVO), as well as several other units such as an archive library etcetera

Our teaching and research activities reflect our strong commitment to animal and human health, food safety, and sustainable food production.

The research activities of the faculty are focused on improving animal and human health, as well as the sustainability of food production systems. Animal health includes both infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases in animals. Human health is studied from a molecular biology perspective, with a focus on biochemical pathways that play an important role in disease processes such as cancer or diabetes mellitus. Food safety is also a core theme within our teaching and research programmes.

The international character of our faculty reflects its international reputation as one of Europe’s leading veterinary medicine faculties. We offer advanced education to students from all over the world who wish to gain expertise in veterinary medicine or related disciplines, such as biomedical science and food science & technology (FST).

The faculty has developed a unique curriculum that prepares students for a career in veterinary medicine or science. Our top-ranked programmes include Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Public Health, and Veterinary Sciences.
