Allopathic Medical School Acceptance Rates
The average medical school acceptance rate for allopathic medical schools in the United States is 7%. The primary factors that impact this rate for individual medical schools are the overall popularity of the medical school and the number of applications received. For example, a medical school that receives 14,000 applications for 150 first year medical student positions will be more competitive, and have a lower acceptance rate than a medical school of the same caliber that receives only 5,000 medical school applications for 150 first year positions.
Some schools are highly selective because they receive many more applications than they can accommodate. These schools tend to be in high demand among applicants. Other schools may be less selective because they receive fewer applications than they can accommodate. These schools tend to be less desirable among applicants and may struggle to attract enough students to fill their class size requirements.
Geography and prestige also influence medical school acceptance rates. Medical schools in desirable locations, typically urban areas, receive more applications than medical schools in more remote locations. Obviously, a medical school’s prestige or reputation will also influence the acceptance and matriculation rates. The more prestigious medical schools may have an 80% or higher matriculation rate (or “yield”) meaning 80% of accepted students actually matriculate whereas as a less competitive medical school may have only a 40% yield meaning only 40% of accepted students matriculate. But remember that this is only the beginning, and there are several things you’ll need to consider and questions you’ll need to ask yourself before you start applying to every school on this list.
1. Medical School Admission Statistics Don’t Tell the Whole Story
The first point to consider is that the statistics don’t tell the whole story. Acceptance rates can tell you how competitive a medical school is, and median GPAs and MCAT scores can give you an idea of matriculants’ academic strengths, but there’s no way to measure the qualitative aspects of medical school applications. Your GPA and MCAT are only a part of your overall application, and while they are important, they alone don’t determine whether you’ll get in. It’s also worth noting that because medical school acceptance rates are notoriously competitive, a majority of students will consider applying to the easiest medical schools to get into.
